Deerhunter/Atlas Sound leader takes on "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy"

Columbia is celebrating the release of Leonard Cohen's new album Old Ideas with the Vimeo series "Old Ideas With New Friends". It features contemporary artists including Cults, Greg Dulli, and A.C. Newman covering their favorite Cohen songs.

Next up is Deerhunter's Bradford Cox, who does a solo acoustic take on 1969's "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy". Of the song, Cox said, "ever since the first time I heard it, I thought it was the most haunting song I'd ever heard."

Columbia/Sony created a series called ‘Old Ideas with New Friends’ to coincide with release of the new Leonard Cohen album this week. This is another video I directed with //ApK of Bradford Cox (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound). Featured today on Pitchfork
I’ve known the Leonard Cohen version of the original for a long time. It was quite memorable to stand in a room while Bradford played ‘It seemed so long ago, Nancy’ and nailed perfect takes each time. We’ve got one more coming next week, but thrilled to see this and the Cults video making some waves on the web.

scocoh wrote:There is also a wide range of intentions from the artists themselves. Some are clearly in awe of Leonard and their honor in doing a song of his shines through. Others seem to barely have heard of him, some are more interested in trying to convince the listener that they themselves are on the same artistic plane as LC-- if only the listener could get it through his/her thick head. And others are so intent on stamping their mark onto a great song that they can't help but overdo it.
Scott,

You hit the nail on the head for me. I used to listen to all versions on the 'tribute' topic, but quickly became disillusioned. It's amazing to me how quickly most of these 'tributes' made me lose my desire to hear anymore.

The only exception to this is hearing forum members, in personal settings, sing perfect/imperfect versions of LC songs. It is always a thrill to experience and be a part of this.

Warmest regards,
Mary

WATCH: Rhett Miller puts an inspired Americana spin on "Tower of Song" in episode 6 of Old Ideas With New Friends, exclusively on Paste Magazine.
http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/av/2 ... -song.html
Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller has been enlisted for Columbia Records’ newest endeavor. The label has created a cover series entitled Old Ideas With New Friends in honor of Cohen, as he remains one of the most influential pioneers in songwriting.

Miller’s rendition of his personal favorite “Tower of Song” is a departure from the original sonorous tones of Cohen. While Cohen capitalizes in the virtues of the monotone, sultry background vocals and gracious key arrangements, Miller puts an Americana spin on the song.

The acoustic cover is lively and inspired. Miller’s twang carries the tune into an enthused inhibitions-to-the-wind kind of dance. There’s no need for any other instrument other than the one Miller strokes away at.

Miller’s cover work never disappoints. The Interpreter became as relevant as the classics themselves.

Check out the cover of “Tower of Song” and be on the lookout for Columbia Records release of Old Ideas With New Friends.

Scocoh - you said it all in two sentences -

"these projects are more about promoting some particular label's artists than honoring Leonard", and my favourite -

"some are more interested in trying to convince the listener that they themselves are on the same artistic plane as LC" - as in look at me, I'm was chosen to honour Leonard Cohen so I must be at least somewhere near his talent.

Why not promote older Cohen performances of these songs to help promote Old Ideas.

The Vimeo site no longer has these performances? Are they long gone?
