ciao Dick,

Thanks for pointing this out. I listened to the song Hey Jane. Very good. It did have a U2 flavor with a French twist. He actually has a good singing voice.

Hello,

Regarding Adam Cohen, I really liked "Cry Ophelia" on his first album. On a radio station in Victoria, I hear it quite regularly. The video was great --he's reeking of sex appeal and you can hear the sensuality seeping out of his voice. The reason why Adam Cohen hasn't had commercial success, I feel, is because he hasn't found a genre. It's also pretty hard to remind your audience why you're great after a 6 year hiatus. It's also pretty hard to ride on daddy's coattails when you don't have one quarter of the lyrical capacity he does. (sorry, Adam).

I thought it was pretty stupid of him to begin the interview in the Gazette on a negative note, because the journalist has the power to make or break his new album. You'll note at the end of the article, the reporter does get back at him. I think he should trumpet his relationship with his dad, and let it get him all of the publicity it possibly can. It sounds like Adam is feeling like he pales in comparison to Leonard, and it is painfully evident at the beginning of the article.

I hope Adam has success with his new album. Jakob Dylan -- oh the comparisons again -- has done much better than he has.

Cheers,

Natalie

I saw Adam's playing in England a few years ago. His first album does not do justice to his voice. He has a powerful voice and sings with passion. I can well understand the if he is techy about the constant comparisons to his dad. He is not his dad. I went to see him because he was Leonard's son and realised straightaway his music and lyrics are not on a par with Leonard's.

But in his own right he is actually a very good singer. Maybe on the back of this album he will tour again and if he comes to a town near you try to go and see him he is well worth seeing live.

It can be a cross as well as a bonus having a famous parent when you want to make your own way in the same business and all people want to talk about is how you compare to your parent.

Regarding his photo in the article: Hubba Hubba

Great voice too.

O.K. I just looked up hubba hubba in the Urban Dictionary. I did not mean "crack cocaine." I was using the old definition of "approval, pleasure."

I picked up a couple of copies of the old Life magazine once. They were issues printed during World War II. In the letters to the editor, a young girl had written in to comment on the previous issue which had featured (on the cover) a young German P.O.W. who was interned in America. The photo of the German P.O.W. revealed a very attractive blond young man. The girl had written two words in her letter to the editor. "Hubba Hubba." In the next issue the poor girl was castigated by other letter writers for her "approval" of the German's good looks.

Anyway, that was my reaction to Adam Cohen's photo. :)

Adam can not be blame for reacting strongly about the father and son matter. Imagine how it could be difficult to take after, came after a Monster of Love like that. He is right, it is most common that children develop interest for the career (whatever it is) of their parents. But when it goes with celebrity people often say that "it is because of his father/mother" and the talent of the artist could be ignored. This is not fair.

What Adam is doing is not my cup of tea, however. Just a matter of taste.

Moonlight, I agree with you regarding the hubba hubba aspect of
Adam Cohen.

Now that he's writing in French, I think it's fair to say that he's ooh la la.

Adam's looks aside, though, I'm not feeling too sorry for him. He's got (a) looks, (2) youth, and (3) a celebrity father. This combination should be, quite simply, dynamite and propel him to icon status. Again, the 6 year hiatus was not good for his career.

I think Adam should welcome the comparison to Leonard. Let's face it. HE WILL NEVER GET AWAY FROM IT. EVER. He should be resigned to that by now. His reluctance to accept it makes him look ungrateful. He will never be as great as his father, which is something that he needs to deal with, too.

I would love to see Adam Cohen in concert, but purely for the aesthetic pleasure. I am not sure how he's promoting this new album, but I am not going to fly to Montreal to see him.

As far as T's mention of L.C.'s quote, "took my diamond to the pawn shop, but that don't make it junk" -- it's a really interesting choice. Adam looks like a diamond, and has value, but you're still giving him up on him. I think that's why you picked it.

Anyway, there you have it.

Hello Natalie,

In fact, that has nothing to do with this subject in particular. I picked this tongue in cheek when responding to this thread :

viewtopic.php?t=2213

And because I like it very much. I like what I feel the meaning is, and I like the country style Leonard Cohen gave to the song and I like the drunkward act he did, performing this song. I'll run it for a while.

Your first commentary about Adam Cohen was OK with me in every point. As for the second, it fits also, but for "he should do this" "he should do that", he certainly should do this and that, only this may be difficult to overcome for him right now, and I do not see it, hum, see it as soooo bad, that was all.

As far as I know Adam Cohen has his very own audience/public/fans.

Hi Tchocolati,

I didn't mean to sound didactic in my last post. It really interests me how people achieve fame. I mean, Adam Cohen is already there, because of his last name. I am talking about mega fame, however. There are musicians out there who have done much better than he has who only have half his talent and dashing good looks (sigh . . .) Again, with the 6 year hiatus, I beg the question: how serious is Adam about his music career? Is this a hobby? I mean, he really doesn't have to work.

Yes, Adam has an audience, but the article said that his first album did not do particularly well. How many fans does Adam have because of Leonard?I wouldn't give him the time of day, if he didn't have the last name he does. Maybe I'll like him better in French.

I have listened to hey Jane and a couple of years ago to cry Orphelia, not my cup of tea I'm afraid but I confess to only have listened to them because he is leonards' son. I don't blame him for being a little teed off with being compared to his father, after all he could try and use his connection to further his career. I get a little fed up of the media making a big deal first about Julian and now Sean of how like their father, John Lennon, they are, but of course they look so much like him when they go out of their way to sing and look like him right down to the round frame spectacles. Adam should be given credit for going his own way, I don't see him as being disrespectful to his father in any way I can understand when he gets a little annoyed when being interviewed when people want to talk about his father rather than his own work. Anyway I wish him luck.
Six year hiatus? could we say like father like son

It has to be down to personal taste. I like what I like that doesn't mean what I like is good. I don't think Adam is riding on Leonard's back the problem for him would be he has to be better than his dad to get praise from some people.

He is not his dad same as we are not our parents he has his own voice and even though he will have been influenced by Leonard he has chosen his own path. In his own right and not as Leonard's son. I disagree with Natalie he is not necessarily there because of his last name.

Just because some of his father's fans don't appreciate his music does not mean his music is not good.

I have, and enjoy, Adam's first album very much. It helps to put aside the fact that he's Leonard's son, and the [hopeful] expectations that come with that. With cloning out of the question, continuing with Leonard's legacy through his son, is not an unappealing thought. It seems some wanted to hang their hat on the hook that they would find this in Adam, and in finding that not to be the case, a sort of resentment crept into their opinion[s] of Adam's singing. I would love to hear Adam singing in French. It's such a beautiful language, and seems a perfect mate to Adam's voice. I haven't looked at the photo yet, so can't comment on that. However, he is [objectively] very handsome.

Hello,

As far as Adam Cohen "not necessarily being there because of his last name," this may be true. It is a natural path for him, and I must appreciate that he is a writer.

I agree with Lizzie; he is not his father. When people buy his album, they are not getting a Leonard Cohenesque album, they are getting Adam Cohen. I applaud him for trying to put a unique stamp on his music. Like I've said before, this French album may be his niche. I hope so. He has a beautiful, sensuous voice, and I think French songs will superbly compliment it. I just question if whispering sweet nothings in my ear will do it for me, but I can't comment on that until I've heard the new album.

Hello,

Natalie I just felt that you were really REALLY concern. Not less, not more.

I think that you, particularly, will appreciate the information there Especially, the interview he gave to Radio-Canada (in the last post). He sounds exactly as you expected him to be.
