Len and Bob just scrape into the top 40 earners......

#39
Leonard Cohen
$9,511,958

Leonard Cohen played his first U.S. concert in 15 years in February 2009. The show kicked off a successful year on the road that earned him $9.2 million in box-office share, dwarfing his $236,200 in CD royalties and $34,748 in digital album royalties.

#38 Bob Dylan
$9,610,011

He may be one of America's most prolific songwriters and recording artists, but Bob Dylan is raking it in these days with his 20-plus-year Never Ending Tour. His box-office share in 2009 was $7.4 million, compared with $1.5 million in CD royalties, $154,592 in digital album royalties, $121,955 in digital track royalties and $350,514 in songwriter mechanical royalties.

HI Ken,

Great to see my two favourites make the grade, but reverse the positions

Not sure what these figures really mean. Ken, do you think this is for 2009 only (not include income from the 2008 tour) and is it what he earned in total or just for his US gigs/sales? Until that is clear, the figures are meaningless. Also, we don't know if that is the figure before the band and all the expenses are deducted, and then there is the dreaded tax man.

Well, I think that it is fair to say that what these figures mean is that dear ol' Leonard will never have to worry about money again!! :D As it should be! I was more than happy to contribute a small bit to his financial well-being! He has certainly contributed considerably to my emotional well-being and overall quality of life!

My guess is that this is North America only.
Billboard's gurus seem to be among the more educated americans, who 'know' that the world begins in New York and ends in L.A. rather than at their own state borders. They seem to figure that Taylor Swift sold the most CD's in 2009 rather than Susan Boyle

It's great to see Leonard doing well and he deserves it. I saw him in concert and it great. But on a down beat note $9.2 million in one year in a recession when people are losing their jobs and incomes, I find a bit much. The price of tickets was high as they all are nowadays and I as one of the ones who has lost his job found it difficult to raise the money and had to go on my own as I couldn't afford the ticket for my wife.
So yes good luck to Leonard, but the ticket prices in the whole are ridiculous and stars are paid far too much and it doesn't matter who they are. Why are people so impressed with what people earn?

Those statistics only show the total gross turnover of the ticket sales. You have to deduct all costs of a tour that goes around the globe, using a private jet and a number of trucks, with a staff of say 70 persons, their accommodation, the venue, marketing costs...
