Billy Joel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, as were Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Sturgess66, thank you for keeping us informed with your posts of wonderful articles with wondeful news, and for the GORGEOUS photos and videos!

And a BIG congratulations to Leonard - it's been said before, but I'll say it again - bandwagon or no bandwagon - IT'S ABOUT TIME! Whatever their motives are, I'm very glad that the interest of these organizations, in Leonard's astounding work, is no longer so "modest"!

May Our Beloved Man forever be showered with praise and recognition!

Billy Joel's name was not on the list - the link that I posted. At least I don't see it. I guess they should update it???? Elton John is there as is Bernie Taupin.

You're better off checking the names of all the inductees on the Songwriters Hall of Fame website

Thought the natural interpretation of 'songwriter' is someone who writes the words of songs! How can Elton John be a songwriter? He never writes the words, he puts words others have written to music, Bernie Taupin, Tim Rice, and so on.

Am I wrong, does anyone know if Elton wrote the words to any of his famous recordings?

I just put that question to Google, Evie - and it seems someone else had asked the same question a couple of years ago at Yahoo Ask!

The answer is " a few" - just a few.

We'll have to wait and see if this year's ceremony will be televised or streamed on the internet. I'll call and ask the Song Hall as well this week.

Well that is more encouraging Roy. :D I thought you had posted earlier that it would not be televised - and not streamed on the internet! Depressing!

I did send an email to both the SHOF and Bravo to inquire - and really don't expect much response - but it occurred to me to try and call tomorrow as well. The SHOF site is very awkward.

I sure hope we can get to see the ceremonies!

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has only been a "virtual museum" as they put it, since 1969. They have induction ceremonies. Then they place the names of inductees in a book somewhere in their offices. They don't have a physical songwriters hall of fame museum building, but supposedly they are working on one to be built and openned sometime in the future in New York. Not sure when yet! Their website also lists all the inductees in their "virtual" museum section. Click on it and see.

The Song Hall's Leonard Cohen bios from press releases announcing the nominees and inductees (2006, 2010). The actual inductee bio is not done yet or posted at the song hall website. We'll have to wait until June.

Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen turned to songwriting after establishing himself as an acclaimed novelist and poet. His resultant songs have earned him an adoring following of music fans and fellow artists, including Judy Collins, who expanded his audience in 1966 when she recorded his song "Suzanne" (actor/singer Noel Harrison also had a hit with it) and Jennifer Warnes, who had been a backup singer for Cohen before releasing her own acclaimed album of his material, "Famous Blue Raincoat," in 1987. His uniquely intellegent output was celebrated in 2006 with the documentary "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." Key songs in the Cohen catalog include "Bird on the Wire," "Hallelujah," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," "So Long, Marianne" and "Suzanne."

Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen's songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn't until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful "Suzanne" to Judy Collins, which later was included on Cohen's debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with "Sisters of Mercy," and "So Long, Marianne." His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen's iconic status with "Bird on the Wire" and "Famous Blue Raincoat." His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen's world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

This is the response I received to my email to SHOF:
Unfortunately, as far as we know, the event will not be televised this year, but it's shaping up to be one of our most memorable. Stay tuned to our songhall.org website for all of the latest news on performers and presenters as we get confirmations.

Thank you for your interest!
So - that is not encouraging at all that we will be able to see the event.

Yes, I just called April Anderson at the Song Hall and she told me the ceremony will not be televised or streamed on the internet this year. All we will get is pictures from the media and videos on Youtube from people who attended the ceremony and used their own video cameras to record.

It was April Anderson who sent the email. Roy - did you ask her why - or if there is any possibility that this may change (it has been televised in the past)? What a shame!

Also - will you be attending - with a camera - that would concentrate on the Leonard Cohen portion - or do you know anyone who will? :D

They are just not interested in having it televised anymore. You have to have Songwriters Hall of Fame membership in order to be able to buy tickets to attend the ceremony. Only those who voted, their guests, the inductees and their guests get to attend, and obviously the people who run the Song Hall. I didn't have $1000.00 to pay to become a voting member, but now I don't need it. I won't be attending. The ceremony does actually get videotaped every year by professionals, just as a recorded history, but it does not get televised every year. Media people are there. The inductees are interviewed when they walk in on the red carpet and when they walk out, and you will get to see those interviews on the Song Halls website and somehow, some of them end up on Youtube, courtesy of the people from the media videotaping I guess. I don't know if Leonard will want to be asked questions at the ceremony. He declined answering any questions from the media when he was being photographed with his trophy backstage at the Rock Hall induction ceremony.
