Thanks for posting this wonderful article --although I wasn't there with Leonard in the early days, in a way I was. Reading this article affirmed that as it is just as I always imagined it was. Growing up in an era where Leonard's poetry and stories created waves--where he was loved and scorned --where he found the courage with his peers and his mentors to write what was in his heart and to play it. Perhaps sometimes in the future, we will look back and realize the debate over whether he was a musician or a poet was as meaningless, as pondering what category any new art form fits into. Is it music? Is it poetry? Is it art? Is it like anything else that fits into those categories? We will compare other artists to him--'he is rather cohenesque'. Thank you burnng violin 8)

burningviolin,

How fantastic to read a review by someone who actually knew him 'back in the day'. Thank you for posting this.

Best regards,

Yes, but how frustratingly vague the writer is. I would like to have read more about these long walks, the black beetle, etc and could have done with less of the purple prose. It's odd how academics feel they have to write in an elaborate style. And it's odd that he didn't bother to research Leonard's true age.

Dr Lionel Tiger is yet another Canadian Icon. I think he deliberately chose that approach to preserve the privacy of a very dear and respected friend.

His records had central integrity and mysterious authority.
Yes. An authentic description.

This was such an unusual blend of factors. VERY interesting.

Thank you so much, burningviolin.

You're welcome Lizzy,

Can't take credit for trawlling though the internet to find it (nor am I a Forbes reader), all I can say is  Twitter is a wonder! :D

AH! Who twittered it?? I thought it was an unlikely combination... Forbes and you ;-) [as it would be for me ;-) ], but the trawling made sense.

Thanks for the link. If I can figure out how to join Twitter, I may... though I don't need a single other thing added to any mental checklists of what to do every day or night  ! I really appreciate knowing where some of those friends of Leonard from back then ended up going. I was a bit surprized at his mention of Leonard's having been so athletic. I wonder in what way he was considered as such.

I took it to mean that LC was physically and emotionally active pursuing the sense of beauty, rather than just interested in the concept intellectually.

As hydriot commented above, the author's academic writing style is "elaborate".

Ahhhh... I'll bet you're right, thanks :) . I missed that altogether  . When I read the sentence, I immediately pictured Leonard in the photo where he's wearing a t-shirt and shorts and wondered.
