Hello,

Though there`re a lot of films from Dublin on You Tube I think
a couple made by me are worth seeing. Especially So Long Marianne
with the audience singing chorus.Leonard seemed to be very
happy watching and listening to the crowd.

and unforgettable recitation: A Thousand Kisses Deep

Oh Kaz -
'So Long Marianne' - this is wonderful.
Thanks so much for flagging it.
I haven't watched any of the YouTube films but couldn't resist this.
What a night, what an atmosphere, what a voice!
I daren't watch your second clip. That's for a few weeks down the road.Too near tears at the first.
Great stuff.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

I watched the first vid. of So Long Marianne, Kaz. Great that you captured it. Thanks. I'm also not sure I want to watch too many of these youtube clips just yet, but in the future they will be invaluable reminders.

I clicked on this one, with Leonard's Whither Thou Goest and his closing remarks from the Saturday including when, referring to the Irish No vote on the Lisbon Treaty he said,

"Ireland continues to bewilder the world. Bless you for affirming your destiny in this vale of tears."

(Earlier he'd emphasised how honoured he was to play in the land of such esteemed literary tradition although I don't recall how he phrased it)

Kaz,
Thank you so much for these two clips. I was at this concert and your clips really capture the atmosphere. It was like a giant party at times and Leonard really reacted to the crowd's enthusiasm - there was a great rapport going on both in the sing alongs and in the moments when you could hear a pin drop during the recitals. Magical night -thank you for posting the clips. Two weeks later and my heart still misses a beat on seeing these!

Someone explained his view of Derry to me lately - the only city in the world where the first six letters are silent. Now that's capital!

I was at the Sunday Lenny concert in Kilmainham & was also lucky enough to get to Neil Young's concert in Malahide Castle grounds on Sun 29th june. Although very different styles & content here was another Canadian artist at the height of his powers. NY was very enjoyable & the weather was exemplary unlike the Sunday Lenny concert where we were pissed on.

One thing I noticed at both concerts & something that pissed me off, was that lots of people around us just started talking loudly when they weren't into the song or didn't know it. Why pay €100 to have a chat with your buddies in a field while being gouged at the bar (admitedly the prices at Lenny's concert, for drink, were very reasonable, I thought).

Apart from a lack of respect for the artist, it also shows a very closed minded attitude & an inability to recognise what art is about - the right of the artist to inform/challenge/educate/startle/transport/etc his/her audience. Is this disrespect/ignorance a common feature of concerts, nowadays?

Apart from these two excellent concerts, I haven't been to a concert in about 20 years.

If only Joni Mitchell would tour, my hat-trick of favourite Canadian artists would be complete!

I think its about being outdoors in Ireland with a free, liberated happy and wonderful crowd. People singing dancing talking is the spirit of the whole thing.
Art, music, literaterature, pornography, dance, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, is what it is, I wouldn't change my experience of it for the world.
Don't get old dude

Hey tiggs,
I'm not talking about being precious about the whole thing but savouring the moment not wasting it with a half arsed attention, talking with disregard to the music, not dancing/enjoying the music. These moments don't get repeated you know? You speak as someone who sounds like they have the arrogance of youth in believing that time is infinite.

As I said why go if you only want to hear the songs you know - it's not a CD/ipod that you can skip to the next track you like. Open your ears & mind to listen to a beautiful lyric from Lenny or a wonderful 30 minute jam from NY.

To hell with this attitude, "it's all part of the spirit of the thing" - I reckon spirits have a lot to do with it all right - mainly from the bar!

Am I alone in this opinion?
