One book of poetry?

Post by Gullivor »

Hello all,

Can you post your absolute favorite book of poetry with or without the reason why?

I am looking to add to my collection as well as study what is suggested.

Thank you much,
Paul

Hi Gullivor,

Sorry, can't identify a book that is an "absolute favorite." Perhaps others can.

I have loved:

Hybrids of Plants and Ghosts by Jorie Graham, because it was given to me by my mother, and has one of Mark Rothko's paintings on the cover. David Budbill's Moment to Moment for the same reason, but not the Rothko part.
Plainwater by Anne Carson, for every possible reason.
Handwriting by Michael Ondaatje
Letters to Yesenin by Jim Harrison is the book of poetry I have read most recently. I loved #19.

If I had to pick one book of poetry to keep, and had no other, it would be Stranger Music. But I do not own a copy of this.

Thank you Steven and Abby for your replies.

Abby,
I just received Stranger Music. I look forward to finding quite time and space to focus.

When I found that video I was truly amazed. Tom Waits voice is powerful and perfect for the message. (I think)

You know I still have Gullivor's ashes in the box on his bed in the same spot it has always been in. I have racked my brain trying to come up with a place to spread them. Nowhere seems appropriate...we have moved around so much. I guess I'll just keep him with me wherever this life takes me...until the end.

If I had to choose just one book of poetry, it would be the Book of Longing.

If what you really want is a suggestion on where to find good poetry, you really can't go wrong with a book for college Literature courses, such as a Norton anthology covering the periods in which you are interested. I also wholeheartedly suggest early Donne and anything Shakespeare.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing your reply on this questions.
As for me, my favorite poetry book is Voices In My Head by Cindy J. Smith for its sincerity and diversity of feelings they reflect. I was deeply impressed by every voice throughout these poems.
