DREAMS
by Samuel Douglas
Dreams we spawn
Run free and strong
In spaces we could never
Belong
for long.
Life is too short,
Or so it seems,
For each of us not
To birth our dreams;
Sundry wonder,
Often torn asunder
As under them
Splinter, crack
The fact that is
Their own mayhem.
Dreams,
Kicked out of closed
Doors
Must wonder
Why they were here
In the first place.
Shining upon
The wrong face,
They wander.
Flight is their right.
Might is their plight.
They steam closer,
Beam brighter,
As they glimpse sight
Of their birthright,
Sometimes gone astry
To betray the night.
Still they stay the day,
Laugh and play,
Dedicated to your right
To fly on just one
Of their unscheduled flights.
Stand beside them.
Fill their hearts
To sustain them.
If one measure
Of your belief
Embraces grief
Your dream will find the thief
And restrain him.
Standing their ground
In unfound places
Our dreams are our oasis
Follow them.

Poem bought on the street.

ah!
are you walking those streets again?
you'll buy anything on the street
a dollar a dream.

yep - pretty muchmat james wrote: you'll buy anything on the street
I was walking the streets - downtown where I grew up. There's lots of quaint stores built with limestone and it sits right on the waterfront - there's some nice stone covered walkways too. It was a Thursday and I had ditched work and drove 2 1/2 hours to have lunch with a friend, on the way from the pub to the cafe was a man reading poems for change ... nice guy let me look through his book, but I didn't take to much time as my friend was already being more then patient - it was pretty cold out.
Re: Samuel Douglas - Dreams
So, we've gone full circle? Poets in Elizabethan times often peddled their poems on the streets (if my memory of history is accurate) and now, in the internet age, they're selling their wares in the street again?
Re: Samuel Douglas - Dreams
He was reading poems for change.
Did he sell this one for change?
The poem was well worth the price.
It is a thought-provocing, almost "beat" type poem.
I like this guy's dream-sensitive mind.

True Gina. Reading his poems on the street probably brings in more money then if he did find a publisher for his book - mind you reading poems on the street and selling your book might be good!they're selling their wares in the street again?
