The Wizard of Is / Suzanne

Post by jarkko » Thu Jun 23, 2005 10:40 am

This is from our friend Ken Kurzweil in NY. He also sent the song in MP3
and indeed she has loaned [most of] the melody from "Suzanne" !!

"I came across the attached unreleased song by Joni Mitchell recorded in 1967. The melody is amazingly like “Suzanne”. The lyrics could be about Leonard. Do you know anything about this?"

The Wizard of Is
by Joni Mitchell

He's a little like the sunlight
As he walks into your kitchen
Kinda golden like the morning
As he asks you what you're fixin'
So you set the table pretty
With the flower that he brings you
And you flutter like a robin
When it's found a friend to sing to
And you think you maybe love him
For he speaks to you in riddles
About little men and Kings
As he holds you like a wizard
And you watch the sunlight scatter from his ring

And the Wizard is your moon now
Your enchanted silver jester
And he fills the dark with moonbirds
While you smile to think that yesterday
You watched him from the shadows
Like a thief who'd come to steal him
With a ladder on a mountain
And you thought you'd never reach him
For he seems too high above you
And he speaks to you in riddles
Saying I am but a mirror
For reflection of your fables
And the happy ending stories that you hear

Anyone here with more info????

Jarkko, I used to be in contact with few collectors who had many of her unreleased songs and outtakes, but nobody ever mentioned this song to me (they all have big collections of Leonard's stuff also). - I think I could ask. Is this song totally new discovery, or it was circulating around on her bootlegs and recordings?

What do you say about sharing that mp3? :D

From lyrics, it seems it is about Leonard, but only because you say the melody is similar. Otherwise, would we recognize Leonard in it, namely, would we recognize him at all, also in Joni's "holy man on the radio, in your mother's house, with your late father's gun" from her Rainy Night House, if she didn't say it's about Leonard? This song could exist for years with nobody seeing the coonection with LC until someone heard the similarity in melody.

Maybe that's why melody was partially taken also, if it is meant to be for/about him. They lived together in 1967. What's with her Chelsea Morning, which seems like direct & obvious stealing form Suzanne? It was written in same period.

Also, what's with that talk at Newsgroup that LC was suing her because of taking his melodies...?

Joni Mitchell Databse shows few dozens of early unreleased songs copyrighted to 1966. Like Winter Lady. Speaking about influence... Not womder she didn't release them. I'll die of laughing now. I hear the melody... Do you hear the melody? "Winter lady, la la la, where you going..."

Winter Lady, where you going
With your hair all soft and loose like snowing
Winter girl, December child
Don't run away

Winter Lady, walking sadly,
Does your lover treat you badly
Do you dream or wish on stars
To hear him say,

"Oh Winter Lady I won't hurt you
I won't cheat you, I won't desert you
Winter Lady you need loving
I need loving too
I need loving you"

Staring out your winter window
At a silver sky you know you've been to
In a kiss, upon a day
Bfore a spring

Winter Lady, cry those crystal tears
He won't know what he's missing
Love's too late, you've changed your mind
And it's my turn to sing,

Oh Winter Lady I won't hurt you
I won't cheat you, I won't desert you
Winter Lady you need loving
I need loving too
I need loving you

Hi,

Seems that "Wizard of Is" is very much a tribute song, arising from personal relationship and admiration of
the song "Suzanne" and the songwriting ability of the man who created it. ... a channeling of her inner
Leonard Cohen? :)

Seems so. Looking this up was prompted by reading about their relationship in the new Biography 'I'm your man ''by Ms. Sylvie Simmons.
