John Prine hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms

Post by Ronaldson »

I really hope John pulls through this. He is a brilliant songwriter, and by all accounts is an all-around decent human being.

John Prine and Leonard Cohen are the only artists that have compelled me by their music to travel far and wide to attend concerts. I had the serendipitous good fortune to meet John and his wife during one of his recent concert tours, and we chatted for several minutes about a variety of things — turns out he is a big fan of Leonard Cohen. I also remember seeing him give a thoughtful interpretation of Bird on the Wire at the Glenn Gould Prize gala concert for LC in Toronto in 2012. Actually, in that performance he made me appreciate and connect to that song in a way that I hadn't been able to previously (I wish I had a recording of it).

I was desperately sad to read the update on John in the early hours. I am hoping against hope that this is another health battle that he will win .... He had cancelled his UK dates twice, in Sept 2019 and Feb 2020, and new dates for Feb 2021 went on sale a few weeks ago. Wouldn’t it be great if it can be third time lucky?

A hint of hopeful news today, as John's wife, Fiona, has tweeted that his condition is now stable, though he remains in the ICU. Also, she has successfully recovered from her own (milder) case of COVID.

From Tom Russell's facebook page...
Say a prayer for our friend John Prine who we found out is in critical condition. Hello in there, John. We love you. My memories of touring with John are endless...and we sang "Paradise" every night. I tried to give John a record once and he said: "Tom, I BUY all your records." A heart as big as the world. One of our greatest writers. Send those prayers....

This is a just-released video from 2016 of That's the Way that the World Goes 'Round, sung as a duet by John Prine and Stephen Colbert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XokTQSGNj3Q

Just before they start singing, Colbert tells Prine: We’ll probably do this for the internet. Unless, you know, something, uh, terrible happens—and we have to cheer up the world on the TV show.

John's wife Fiona clarifies, "stable doesn't mean he's recovering."

From Fiona Prine's Facebook:

This is John’s 8th day in ICU . He is receiving excellent medical care and being treated with kindness and compassion by the entire team looking after him day and night.
I cannot be with him which makes this nightmare all the more distressing for me.
As you know, John was put on a ventilator last Saturday. He still needs quite a bit of help with his breathing. Like many patients currently in ICU beds all around the world, John has pneumonia in both lungs. He has also developed some peripheral issues that are being treated with meds, including antibiotics.
He is very ill and yet I remain hopeful that he can continue to fight this devastating virus and come home where we can care for him.
I don’t have the words to adequately Thank You all for the outpouring of love and prayers that John and our family has received this last week. It means the world to us to have your love and support at this difficult time.
On behalf of me and our boys- Jody Jack and Tommy - please know that we are keeping you all in our hearts with a prayer that you stay safe and healthy. Please continue to send Love, Prayers and Positive Energy to John. He needs us now more than ever.
John loves you and I love you too.

R.I.P John Prine

A great loss for music and mankind. One of lifes great story tellers.

I was lucky enough to see him at the Palladium a couple of years ago and was hoping to see him again in 2021.
My thoughts are with his family and his many friends.

One of his greatest songs (though they were all great) https://youtu.be/OVhA01J0Zsg

One of my favourites https://youtu.be/DZXgZGrVlL4

Thanks for the Souvenirs JP...xx

John Prine - When I Get To Heaven (Lyric Video)

(The giggling sound of a child in the background was his grandson unexpectedly running around in the room. It is rather sweet.)

Sturgill Simpson posted a message on his instagram page...
I'm very sorry it took me so long..I had to go into the woods and let myself “just feel” this for a while.
You left on a gorgeous moon.

There are sometimes people in this life that you meet, seldom and few and far between it would seem, whose souls are so good and pure and beautiful that when they leave it seems if only for a brief while that everything else good and pure and beautiful in this world just left along with them. It blows you apart leaving everyone to see you broken. But then you come out of the woods and the funk to see the signs of Spring all around you and remember the joy and love they put into the world by always giving so much of themselves and you suddenly see them everywhere.

There is so much I never said only because I didn’t want to bother you with it. After all you never asked to be “John Prine”. There is so much I’ll never get to say now. You reminded me so much of my Grandfather it hurt sometimes. I never told you that.
I will miss the tours..I will miss our lunches..I will miss you listening to me bitch and complain about all the things you understood all too well and making me feel better sometimes by just sitting there saying nothing.
I will miss catching flies in mid-air with my hand just to make you laugh..I will miss showing up to the office and knowing Id just missed you there by finding my drums upside down..I will miss your corny ass jokes.
I will miss you. Every day.

So long old man.
You will always be loved.
