And to add to that set of 3 is 'Leaving El Paso' by Tom Russell where he references the song and Feleena...

Hi Tony,
yes El Paso City always intrigued me - it was more spiritual than the other two.
Tom Russell's cowboy ballads were clearly influenced by Marty Robbins.

Thanks for that, Kush. How could I forget that when I have the cd?! It brings us nicely back to Tom Russell again.

Tony, Bev, Karren, Kush and all other 'other music' visitors, thank you and Merry Christmas!

Another Tom Russell, a live clip of The Light Beyond the Coyote Fence (which narrowly defeats The Last Time I saw Hank as my most played from Folk Hotel):

A Merry Christmas to you too, Diane, and thank you for the live clip. This Tom Russell and Katy Moffatt song takes me somewhere long ago and far away, although it seems like yesterday, to people who are no longer here. Bitter sweet.

Having seen my words, 'long ago and far away,' in my previous post they reminded me of a Harvey Andrews song with that title. Another sad song.

Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings Happy Holidays to Tony, Diane and everyone else - us 'The Others' and also to 'The Main Ones' - I recall a Nicole Kidman movie by that name.

I came across this awesome Christmas song by Tom Russell that I had not heard before - Streetlights and Snow. As always he keeps it real ! A story about Joey Bones and Angel. TR is truly a 'worker in song' - he keeps churning out these great songs year after year (or I keep discovering these hidden gems year after year). I believe this is an outtake...

Anne & I along with my sister Jane saw Tom in Scottsdale, Arizona playing outdoors with Camelback Mountain in the background. It was a great concert. I'm anxious to get his new album.

Hi Joe,

Looks like it was a great concert and in sunny weather - something I am really looking forward to after the the -25 degree winter days :). Will email you shortly - It has been a very busy 2019 !

I went to a Tom Russell concert last Saturday. It was the usual high standard with a very appreciative audience. He sang songs from his recent cd, 'October in the Railroad Earth.' I particularly enjoyed 'Highway46.'

Very nice song, Tony.

Where were you on the day Merle Haggard died
Did you pull off the road, break down and cry
I drove down Highway 46, I sang a verse of Mama Tried
Where were you on the day Merle Haggard died

I came across another tribute to Merle Haggard by Ray Benson (of Asleep at the Wheel) and Dale Watson...a number of familiar faces make an appearance in the video - Kristofferson, Margo Price, Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett are ones I recognized among others.

Hello Kush,

I really enjoyed the video - the song and spotting the faces too. It reminded me of a tribute to Hank Williams sung by David Allan Coe, 'The Ride.'

That outdoor concert of Tom Russell must have been a good experience, Joe. After Kush's mention of Merle Haggard I have just been listening to him singing 'Kern River'. It is a sad, haunting song.

Hi Tony,

That is a great song and that whole album was one of my favorites from the late 80s if I remember right. Here is another song I came across recently -

The Immigrant

and one more...

Grandma Harp
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs7kvRsum8E

the theme is universal !
