Buffy Sainte-Marie

Post by A.Sukitu »

Buffy Sainte-Marie is appearing at this year's Meltdown at the Southbank in London, UK:
Monday 6 August at the Purcell Room - giving a talk on her work
Tuesday 7 August in the Queen Elizabeth Hall - in concert.
[Buffy Sainte-Marie put the words of "God is Alive, Magic is Afoot" to music, very wonderfully.]
"You let me sing, you lifted me up, you gave my soul a beam to travel on. ... You gave the injury a tongue to heal itself."
Leonard Cohen in Book of Mercy (1984) Ch. 19.

Buffy gave an overview of her life as an artist/musician/human being. She answered questions from the audience and referred to her cd "Illuminations" - particularly with reference to her reading Leonard's "Beautiful Losers" and putting 'God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot' to music.
Tonight (Tuesday) she will be in concert. She mentioned that the vibrato in her voice comes from the emotion she feels when she is singing the song.
She also acknowledged that Canada has taken responsibility for, and is apologising for, the wrongs done to indigenous peoples.
....... She will be wonderful in concert - go if you can!

she is wonderful ...
do catch her if you can in future; she is "the real deal".
[LC info from concert: initial backdrops of photographs of Buffy on a screen included one which appeared to show a very young Leonard Cohen holding out his hand to greet Buffy - and he looked absolutely delighted.]
