It got a killer review in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. I haven't heard any of the songs yet, but after standing comparison to John Cash's American Recordings, I've got to listen to some of the songs. Apparently the album's hitting the highest spots of the American charts too.

I wonder if he'll pick "Tower of Song"?

After admiring the man's voice for decades, my opinion of him changed drastically. He is the complete opposite of our beloved LC. There is no graciousness or humbleness and he is definitely not a gentleman. Sir, indeed! Still has an incredible voice though.

eh what are you talking about??? In any case, a certain amount of ego is a good quality, balances out excessive humility. The forum's gone all touchy feely sweet sickly saccharine.
Sounds like an interesting album from the description given. Blues, gospel, country.....

he's singing at sandown park racecourse in the summer.

perhaps our favourite horse `buddy holly` will be running?

...The second artist confirmed for the Sandown Park Music Nights this summer will be the legendry Tom Jones, performing on Wednesday 27 July. He will be singing live after racing whilst the crowds enjoy his classic hits as the sun goes down over the racecourse...

he'll also be summer-singing outdoors at kenwood house and ditto at audley end - but no horses scheduled to appear at either AFAIK.

If the summer concerts are anything like his Celtic Connections show in January I would say Go! The Glasgow concert was one of a small handful of Praise and Blame shows and I have no hesitation in saying it was one of the highlights of the festival for us, alongside Yasmine Levy. A bit surprising perhaps given that we normally head for shows which are sort of cutting edge Celtic but TJs voice and presence were absolutely mesmerising. He sang P&B in its entirety and just did 3 "greatest hits" (Green Green Grass, I'll Never Fall in Love and It's Not Unusual) as an encore. Definitely no knicker throwing.

And Mary, he was gracious and a gentleman. Maybe not always so - though I suppose the same could also be said of Leonard.

Although I'd come to consider Tom Jones as the epitome of schlock (whatever that is) I have to confess that a free live CD of his that was given away in (hushed whisper) The Daily Mail, is one of the best albums that I've heard this year (I didn't buy the paper, honest...I know this shop where they sell the CDs for 50p the next day, even though they shouldn't). Anyway, it contained fine versions of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" and "Dylan's "What Good Am I" plus a full smattering of the Jones oeuvre, most of which I've somehow come to embrace (even "Sexbomb"). It seems that TJ has come full circle, and dare I say it...it could actually be cool to like him again!

All good things, John E

After the last time we saw him perform live in that 'most unmagical of places', and then encountering him after the show at one of the hotel's restaurant bars, we swore we would never go to another one of his shows. We still do enjoy listening to some of his music - the man can definitely sing. Wendy, I am so glad your experience was positive.

As to your second sentence above - touche! ;-)

Warmest regards,
Mary

Re: tom jones - the wheelbarrow

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

...SINGER Sir Tom Jones stunned punters in a pub in Camden Town when he staged a surprise free gig.

Just hours before he was due on stage at Senate House, the veteran Welsh crooner appeared at The Wheelbarrow, in Camden High Street, on Thursday to perform a half-hour set to a crowd of less than 100 people.

The 72-year-old and his band were taking part in a publicity stunt in 28 London pubs organised by Guinness for “Arthur’s Day” but it was not known until the last minute which venue he would sing at.

The It’s Not Unusual singer, who was knighted in 2006 for services to music, rocked up at the popular music venue at around 6pm, with crowds quickly gathering outside once the news had spread...
