"...a musical interpretation of the poems of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova..."

She's been one of my favorites for many decades. I read a biography of her many years ago and have a slim volume of her work, Poems of Akhmatova, on my shelf. It's one of those with Russian & English on facing pages, and I used it to practice me Russki back in the day. .
Never considered the possibility someone might set her words to music.
Thanks for that info, Diane. I might need to acquire a copy of that!

I remember that video from before and how quickly she set music to words!

Elvis and Waylon Jennings are the most evocative and dynamic singers to my untrained yet promiscuous ears ! I have a pretty good collection of Elvis songs from itunes and my favorite period is the 70s.
Kush, there’s nothing like the atmospheric crackle and pop of my old vinyl records from that time! I never got into Waylon Jennings but just for fun, here’s something else for your promiscuous ears :) Elvis and Leonard have an uncommon connection with the 16th century song Greensleeves and from then it would appear, so do I ;-)

Very nice B4 ! I had not heard Stay Away before. Indeed, recently I have been hearing New Skin for the Old Ceremony and Songs of Love and Hate again after a long time so Leaving Greensleeves has been on rotation.

Re' Waylon I have posted many of his songs but I don't believe I have posted these before - how can you not be evoked by

Kush,
I have to say that I laughed out loud at Waylon's (and yours in posting it) sense of humour with his song "Nobody Knows I'm Elvis" but forgive me, overall he just doesn't ring my bell

I can count on one hand the artists I like including almost all of their songs. In all other cases, I really like a song on its merit alone with that particular combination of lyrics and non-favourite artist or simply for the musical score and/or playing instrument/s alone. Here’s proof in the pudding - I was tidying up my old albums recently and came across an old dusty ;-) Dusty Springfield album that I’ve had for ages and not played in a very long while. She’s not one of my favourite singers but I remember buying the album for one solitary song. Yep, one song only; this one – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvWiiUgT8Nk

So glad I’ve re-discovered this song, not exactly the album! I was a teenager when Goin' Back first came out and I love it now as much as I did back then. But I relate to it now as the years that have gone by relate to me. True lyrics always survive the test of time. The last verse seems somewhat applicable to the world’s current situation.

"Let everyone debate the true reality
I'd rather see the world the way it used to be
A little bit of freedom's
All we lack
So catch me if you can
I'm goin' back."

Hi Bev,
I didn't know you were a Dusty fan. I am also in that category and often listen to her when I'm not listening to Leonard. many years ago I bought a compilation CD and discovered "Broken Blossoms" - are you familiar with it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZfnsBSq6cQ

BTW another good version of "Goin' Back" is by Glenn Shorrock and Renee Geyer - good old Oz music. Have a listen if you are not familiar with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0Orf23bNFY

Re artists that I like all their songs - I don't think I have even one.
Almost all their songs, yes there are a few: LC, Scott Walker, Elvis, Dusty, Mamas & Papas are the only ones on my list.
Most other artists are in the "Greatest Hits" category.

My listening addiction over the past few days has been Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which I find to be endlessly fascinating, brilliant and sublime beyond compare. For me, it reflects the power of the human spirit, and it fills me with joy and hope!

I’m not really. Sorry if I seem to have given you the wrong impression. As I’ve said above, she’s not one of my favourite singers and I only bought her album for that one song alone. Yes, I’m aware of the Aussie version but I much prefer Dusty’s. For me her version is like you say, “in the Greatest Hits category” and she has a lot of illustrious company there too! Thanks for that link to the Broken Blossoms song. I had never heard it before – great lyrics!

You know, even though I'm not really a fan of female singers I do have a lot of them individually with excellent songs in my "Greatest Hits category”. If I was forced to choose only one female singer it would be Jennifer Warnes.

The 5 artists on one hand for me are: LC, Elvis, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen and John Denver. And yes, there are some of their songs that I don’t like. Now comes to mind another album, Nashville Skyline, that I bought in 1969 for just only one song that I loved – Lay Lay Lay by Bob Dylan. I do have a lot of his albums plus my own compilation of asstd songs that I like from his other albums. So I guess he starts the count on my left hand at no 6 - or my right hand now has six digits! I should add instrumentally I have a great Classical 6CD set that covers many moods but I still pick and choose other individual ones, especially those featuring violin and cello. Then there are times when I really have to hear a lead guitar do its thing!

Lisa, also nice to catch up with you here too!
As you know, my taste in music is eclectic – from rock to classical - just look back through this thread.
An example here https://www.leonardcohenforum.com/viewt ... 75#p350825
I confess the 4th movement containing Ode To Joy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wod-MudLNPA is really the only part of Beethoven’s Ninth I am familiar with. Most people would recognize the melody but maybe not realize where it originally came from. You are so right; it’s most uplifting at any time and especially in these troubled times.

Hi, Bev! Yes, I recall that you are a fellow classical music enthusiast! I highly recommend listening to Beethoven's entire Ninth Symphony sometime -- the preceding movements are wonderful in their own right, and set the stage for that final glorious movement. The lovely Adagio, in particular, is a thing of sublime and delicate beauty -- Beethoven wrote some of the most amazing slow movements, and to not listen to one of them seems a terrible shame!

I have discussed with others the, to me, rather unfortunate habit of listening only to certain movements of classical pieces, and not bothering with the others. It is a peculiar thing. Would one set out to watch only a fraction of a movie, or read only a few chapters of a book, or look at only a small corner of a painting, and never bother to spend the time to experience the whole of what the artist who created it intended (especially when one actually enjoys the parts that they do bother with)? I think that it is far less likely in the other arts to enjoy only a fragment of a work, and yet, in classical music, it is almost commonplace to completely ignore entire movements of a single piece of music (because, it is one single piece, conceived as a whole by the composer), and instead to just play, listen to, or record, fragments. I honesty find the habit to be something of a disservice to the composers, and definitely a loss to the listeners who fail to hear and appreciate remarkable musical works in their entirety.

Of course, some is better than none, and if a person listens to even a little bit of classical music -- their favourite movements, perhaps -- then I don't want to complain too much, because it is great when people enjoy any classical music at all. But, I will always encourage people to try to listen to entire pieces, because it can be such an amazing journey to do so, something that I enjoy immensely, and I truly want other people to experience it!

Cheers!

Ah Lisa, of all the arts, it does seem to be common practice to listen to classical music that way. Maybe because of how it’s sometimes marketed these days. A perfect example is my 100 Best Classical Composers 6 CD set.

100 best classical composers (back cover).jpg
But I will take your advice and listen to the whole ninth and in this particular case, not skip to the end of the book first :)

Hi Kush, I thought you would be here somewhere ;-)

No room - I already have a deformed six digit right hand by adding Dylan! And yes, as you know I do like a lot of Seger's songs but not enough of them for him to be counted on one normal right hand! (Every time I've said or thought those last two words, Nick Cave's song, Right Red Hand keeps popping into my head!) I have a personal compilation of 30 favourite Bob Seger songs and the one you mentioned is in it. I know I’ve referenced some of the others in this section somewhere. You might like to know that he is on my left hand :)

Thank you for the reminder, Lisa! I am listening as I write :D.

Diane, quite a few years ago wrote: Maybe the best concert I ever attended was Beethoven's 9th by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Simon Rattle. Out of this world.

My list of 'in this world', music - and also 'world music' - is plentiful. But I have already said enough about that ;-) .
