Well, I’ve finally finished going through PP&M’s songs. I will say that generally I prefer the earlier ones. Even so, below are some from their later albums that I like. And seeing that I started this project talking about folk songs and classical music, it seems fitting to conclude my quest with the soul-soothing Adagio For Strings from their album, The Prague Sessions. The other songs on it are from previous live concerts and recorded with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in Prague shortly after the death of Mary Travers. It has been said that it feels like a stately goodbye, made memorable because that is exactly what it is -- a goodbye.

I've been listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Live at WOMAD 1985. The first time I heard it was at WOMAD 2019, when we were treated to a preview just before its release, of this rediscovered and remastered recording of Nusrat's neophyte-audience-stunning performance from the third of Peter Gabriel's WOMAD UK festivals. The wheel had come full circle.

I became aware of the Swingle Singers many years ago, singing "scat" to a variety of types of music, and quite liked them. Then they reformed as Swingle 2 and released "Rags and all That Jazz" in 1975 (with real lyrics!), which I listen to often, but this (Weeping Willow) is by far my favourite track.

Hi Alan et al,

You have reminded me that I fortuitously found these four CDs recently at my local library.
Some of you will know that I am rather partial to Irish artists and their music :)
Below are some of my favourites from those albums -

Hello B4Real,

"Btw - I’ve tried to find the single separate sheet music for this and so far, no joy :("

So far, I can see this:

All the best,
merton.

I seem to recall that we took up a stringed instrument around the same time some years ago. You are doing well. I'm struggling with my cello. It really dislikes me.

listening to the Goldberg Variations by Bach, and teaching my 13 yr. old how to play Hallelujah on the piano.. She can finally correctly play the correct chords but recently decided she wanted to switch to the key of E.. very confusing for someone who really doesn't know the song yet.

Leonard playing in the background is a godsend... for some reason i can remember his words and melodies readily.

Hi merton,
Thanks for your efforts in trying to locate the sheet music I wanted but unless I need new glasses, I couldn’t see any in your first link. Of course, I liked your second link song. I’m sorry for the confusion but I meant sheet music for the song in my video link of “Love And Honour”. I didn’t want to buy a complete songbook this time but Nevermind, your kind thought was there!

Ha! that brought a wry smile to my dial :) Maybe your cello has been talking to my violin - read on -

Yes, I remember when we started our string thing and Lisa did so too at about the same time but with a guitar.
I haven’t been playing my violin much lately. I’ve been meaning to take it to the luthier about 50 kilometres away.
I think the timbre of the timber has been affected by the last hot summer here. I’ve replaced the strings and it’s still the same dull resonance. Of course, it’s not my intonation ;-) but oh, to be half as good as Tara in that song!

Hi B4Real,

My cello teacher is right as usual. Read the piece before you try playing it she keeps telling me. :D Likewise with Forum posts, I suppose.

I'll keep an eye out. Hopefully, it will turn up for you.

Perhaps in a lifetime or two, I'll be able to play the cello on this piece, maybe you on violin over zoom. :D

Hi Bev! Indeed I did, and it is very nice of you to remember. I absolutely love my guitar (classical, of course, both the instrument and the music), and it loves me -- we have a very good symbiotic relationship. I play it almost every day -- it is an endless source of joy and inspiration!

In the meantime, I also took up the Renaissance lute -- I don't play it quite as often as my guitar, but I very much love it, and it seems to like me a fair bit, too.

The main thing is that we enjoy playing our instruments, whatever our respective skills. After all, music comes from the heart (or at least, it is most enriching when it does)!

Cheers!

Completely and utterly true, Lisa!
And that's interesting about you playing the Renaissance lute about which I know absolutely nothing!
It's good to expand your musical skills.
I have considered taking up the mandolin as there is a tuning comparison to the violin but for now, I really don't want to give up my bow for my fingers but double strings would indeed be fun :)

merton,
I wouldn't let your temporary tiff with your friend the cello get in the way of your enjoyment.
Yes, friends do disagree from time to time but they are always there for each other ;-)

Be sure not to confuse it with a mandoline -- the latter would be treacherous for the fingers! ;-)

And, yes, double strings are fun, as is plucking strings with one's fingers!

Since this thread is supposed to be about music we're listening to, here is Nigel North, one of my favourite lutenists, playing a few tunes by John Dowland on Renaissance lute. Dowland was one of the great English lute composers (and players) of the late 16th-early 17th century, and also one of my favourites. The first piece in the set is one of the most famous melodies from the era, "Lachrimae".

If you're interested enough to watch, I hope you enjoy it! Cheers!

And, here's one for Bev, combining her love of Celtic music with my love of the lute: Turlough O'Carolan's "Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór", originally written for harp, but played here by Ronn McFarlane on a Baroque lute (it has more strings and different tuning than its Renaissance cousin).

Enjoy!

Thanks, Lisa for those two links!
