What started as a small group of friends getting together to celebrate the work of Leonard Cohen has become an annual ritual, drawing hundreds of people in St. John's, NL.
Leonard Cohen has yet to attend Feast of Cohen festival.
The city's 6th annual Feast of Cohen starts Tuesday and runs for four days at the Resource Centre for the Arts in St. John's.
Over the four days a host of Newfoundland musicians, singers, songwriters, actors and poets will present songs by the Montreal-born Cohen.
FROM NOV. 16, 2005: Cohen, Murray to join Songwriters Hall of Fame
It's an opportunity to hear the music and poetry performed live and to discuss Cohen's art and legacy, says singer and actor Vicky Hynes, the event's founder and organizer.
Participating artists this year include Bryan Hennessey, Dave, Geoff and Sean Panting, Colleen Power, Jenny Gear, Joel Hynes, Blair Harvey, Chris Hynes, Jill Porter, Lindsay Barr, Des Walsh, Mary Barry, George Morgan and Sandy Morris.
Originally conceived as a low-key way to shake off post-Christmas blues, the festival has become a major event that attracts about 1,000 people, Hynes says.
Cohen knows of the annual festival, but has yet to make an appearance. Cohen was inducted into the Canadian songwriters' Hall of Fame in February.
According to a Cohen fansite, St. John's is not the only city to love the Canadian bard and author of Beautiful Losers. Berlin plans a Cohen festival in August 2006.
Cohen has a book, a DVD and a CD coming up in 2006 and may even tour toward the end of the year. A documentary, Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, was first screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
In September 2006, Cohen's next book, Book of Longing, a collection of previously unpublished poems and drawings, will be published. Many of the works were written and drawn at the Mount Baldy Zen Centre in California and in India, where he recently travelled on a spiritual journey.
