do you remember last summer at cape cod.jpg
someone has asked how a few haphazardly placed lines could eventually comprise the recognisable face of a man. i think the key is to not distrust one's ability. perhaps all that is needed is faith. peter might have walked more than two steps on the water had he not doubted his own potential.

Geoffrey, wrote this extraordinary passage "someone has asked how a few haphazardly placed lines could eventually comprise the recognisable face of a man. i think the key is to not distrust one's ability. perhaps all that is needed is faith. peter might have walked more than two steps on the water had he not doubted his own potential."

As ever, your sporting knowledge is well patchy. The water skier, Peter Taylor. was such a brave man, finally losing his cancer fight in April 2017. The annual memorial event exposes your comment as nonsensical. Here is how Facebook reports "A fun filled weekend of barefoot waterskiing held in memory of a great barefoot waterskiing legend, Peter Taylor. Peter Taylor was a larger than life character who was admired and respected in the barefooting community both locally and internationally. Coming together to have fun barefoot waterskiing and celebrate the life of this amazing fellow seemed the most fitting way to honour all he held true for the sport he loved."

Peter had faith in his ability and walked rather more than 2 steps in the water, barefoot. He was a CHAMPION. Get your fats right. No point in posting if you make my steaks.

Jesus, you really are insulting the memory of this great man. Luckily, I am no disciple of your work. It makes me wonder if a few haphazardly placed lines in your posts could compromise the reputation of a man.

bare feet and watersports . . . are we talking about fetishism here?

never heard of him.

thank you. coming from a frank zappa fan i take that as a compliment.

This is the Man, the memory of whom you sully.

Fit not are you, his feet to kiss. What is your longest waterski-jump? Let us compare mythskiologies.

You have always underestimated Peter and an apology long overdue to give you are

I attach here a photograph of the Great Man. If he were alive today he would be turning in his grave at your vicious put-downs, put up with which he wouldn't have.

You wrote, in provocation I trust, rather than deeply ignorance as if he were not the Champion that the well-informed of coursely know.

Have you already forgotly the front page of the Courier, back in May 2017, "Peter Taylor died on Saturday after a battle with cancer, leaving behind wife Janine, children Brett, Michael and Kristy and grandson Tate.

He was 56-years-old.".

I beseech that neither Kristy nor Brett, Michael nor Tate, visit this forum. Janine is doubtless aware of your attack on Peter. I pray for her recovery from the shock of reading your post-death cowardly calumny. To claim he did not walk more than 2 steps on the water is equal as to be with saying "Geoffrey Wren has drawn 2 sketches of the boxer, Leonard "knock your head off" Cohen."

Have you been to the dentist again, Geoffrey? I recall your mentioning that you suffer from dentophobia -- perhaps that has inspired this latest sketch.

hello my dear. no, a fresh visit to the dentist has not occurred. in fact she has not made contact for several months now.

i do indeed suffer from dentophobia, as you call it, and severely too - but like karma chameleon it comes and goes. there are two things that bring it on: firstly if a toothache sails into my mouth and drops anchor, and secondly if a message from the dentist announces that a new check-up is on the horizon. at all other times a completely normal life is enjoyed. apart from an article recently read in a magazine, no thoughts appertaining to dentistry are ever entertained, and no one who engages me in conversation has an inkling that the confident and jovial person with whom they socialise is regularly terrorised into a quivering chunk of panic-stricken jelly.

such are the consequences of child mismanagement by incompetent dentists with zero psychological training.

"Dentophobia" is not a word of my creation -- it is what a fear such as yours is usually referred to, or alternatively, odontophobia. Apparently it is a fairly common affliction, from what I've read and heard. Although I do not suffer from it, I have personally known numerous individuals who, like yourself, are "terrorised into a quivering chunk of panic-stricken jelly" when they must go to the dentist. Some of my acquaintances actually become physically ill. So, you are not alone.

thank you, lisa. your reassurance that dentophobia is widespread does give a little comfort. 'a coward dies a thousand deaths', as the bard said, and one does not enjoy having one's mettle called into question. according to research, there appears to be documentation that high intelligence and anxiety are linked (i must be an exception to the rule), although that would not equate with it being "a fairly common affliction" - unless you mean amongst the mentally gifted. very few people in my circle of acquaintances are above average intelligence, and virtually none of them admit to being scared of going to the dentist. why, they even boast of how much they enjoy it, bastards that they are. one can understand why diogenes picked up his torch and went looking for an honest man.

I think the idea that high intelligence and anxiety are linked is meant to be something like the corollary to the idea that "ignorance is bliss". Despite the fact that I have, of course, heard these two theories put forward, I have never come across particularly convincing evidence: even supposedly scientific "research" can be highly flawed, when it is conducted in a totally inadequate fashion. Often this involves biases being built into the research methodology, such that the results will almost inevitably be skewed towards whatever conclusion(s) the researcher(s) wish to advance. I have, in fact, read countless research papers in which the methodology used for the study in question was simply laughable, resulting in completely invalid conclusions. But, that doesn't seem to stop this quasi-research from being published and the results of it being announced as "fact".

Even anecdotally, from my own personal experience, I've met many relatively happy and well-adjusted extremely intelligent people, and also many anxiety-ridden not-so-intelligent people, and thus I would not make the same generalisations that you do, nor would I draw the same conclusions that you have drawn in your remarks, above (nothing new there!).

Therefore, no, I did not mean "amongst the mentally gifted" when I remarked that dentophobia is "apparently a fairly common affliction, from what I've read and heard" -- I am merely aware of the fact that it is supposedly something that seems to disturb a lot of people. Mind you, I have not done thorough research on that particular subject (thus my inconclusive qualifiers), and my opinions on the matter may be subject to change.

you make much sense, lisa - as usual. there may be some truth in the argument that someone with a low IQ worries less than someone with a high IQ, all depending upon the amount of knowledge they have accumulated. yet knowledge is only an antidote for anxiety if what one learns gives comfort, not if one learns of impending disaster. also, if a person discovers that they have lost their wallet and is unaware that someone is bringing it back to them, then ignorance would not be bliss. as you say, one cannot always trust the integrity of research conclusions. in the end, after sifting through generalisations and the opinions of experts, one has to rely on one's 'gut instinct' - which was also leonard's advice to his manager mr kory.

'a coward dies a thousand deaths', as the bard said,
I have been lifting weights (off my mind) several times a day for the last few years. This is in addition to my volunteer emergency dental duties, so maybe my memory is suffering. I don't care what the Great Majority says about you, (unless it's really funny) as I know from butter experience that you can be an honest person, so when did I ever say that? Huh? When?

Give full particulars of the performance venue and the date. Although I script most of my shows, maybe it was an impromptu comment which I used to plan for TV Specials. Or perhaps it was a dressing-room aside caught by a microphone, connected to a tape-device, you had planted, at 4 in the morning, in the desperate hope of recording a confidential conversation, details of which you would then accidentally sell on to a disreputable Norwegian newspaper, just like the time you earned 50 Krone from Summerposten with your article "English Lawyer eats a fish", which increased their circulation by 3 and my blood pressure by 4 as I was absolutely furious at your treachery in the same way Leonard Cohen used to sing "they laughed and laughed and said well-child (please note Cohen's subtle insertion of the English translation of my surname, as if I would miss that, did he think I was dumb?) are your lessons done?" in his Hit Single "Teachery".

It goes round in circles when you play with the Big Boys, Jeffery, especially "if it be your wheel".

Wren are you going to realise that?

i realise you are impatient for a response, solong, my dear friend - and it breaks my heart to know how utterly deserted you must feel. it cannot be nice to keep checking back in here and finding zilch, but you have to understand there is life away from this computer - at least where i live. promise to get back just as soon as everyone leaves me be.

as a little plaster on the wound, and as it is known that you like chess, here is a somewhat pitiful stereograph. stare at it and see if you can spot anything special. :)
