am so glad to learn there was at least one person nice enough to say thank you, alan. you must have had a lovely childhood, i can always tell who got brought up properly. there is more where that footage came from but i am a long way from home right now. guess what, the dentist appointment is over now and she said my teeth are all fine, she just polished them and said i can come back in nine months, a big weight off my shoulder. have to go, they are coming back to the car.

thank you, Cheshire gal, for glowing like a lantern amongst the shadows of this cold october evening. i appreciate your company so much, as well as that of everyone else who takes time to sprinkle their observations upon my presence in this forum. we who dare to show ourselves may not be many in number, more like a small family, each member possessing a different personality. we manage to continually interact, sharing our thoughts, successfully for the most part - whether they be compatible with our own or not. it is truly an honour to be counted amongst this community. some people prefer to lurk in the background, and that is all right, too - that's what leonard did.

beneath this useless little pencil doodle is a link to some footage that you may not have seen, Cheshire gal. filmed mostly from a screen, it has only been made public once before, very briefly. i didn't do a very good job, but maybe it's better than nothing? if not, i can see if i can find something better.

"people want to know whether you're for or against a particular issue, and will base their entire possibility of friendship with you on opinions that you may or may not hold, and that's a reason to keep quiet about most things" - leonard cohen

I also check your contributions every day but I do not feel drawn to comment each time. I presume there are many others in the same category.
I thank you for your latest YouTube link - marvelous!

Best wishes,
Alan

it gives great pleasure to share things concerning leonard, alan - so no thanks are really necessary.

you wrote a while ago that there are very few books you have read a second time immediately after finishing it the first time. i did exactly that with leary's 'politics of ecstasy' and burroughs' 'naked lunch'. you will likely note that my literary interests are considerably less scholastic than those of your own, but an intellectual person i have never been. as a young man i was accepted into the prestigious humanistisk akademi of 'nansenskolen' in lillehammer, but dropped out before completion. some of us are destined to be failures, and i am surely amongst that lawless crowd, but it's good to drop into this forum and 'rub shoulders' with people like yourself.

nothing much to show this time. my week has been filled with traveling around the sunnmøre district with a group of muslims, socialising and fixing cars - so i have not been home very much. we have to put special spiked tyres on our cars when winter approaches. therefore, scans from a battered notebook carried in the pocket are all i have to offer.

in an attempt to stop this message from being completely void of any substance, i have moved another travelling back in time video back into the public domain. leonard singing 'going home'. (link at the bottom).

unproductive at the moment.
sadek takes the plaster of paris off his leg today and i think mehmet's fever is about to break - then i get more time to do stuff. gudrun has invited me to lamb casserole at five o'clock, she knows i don't eat pork.
french song under the pic (leonard really hits those low notes). have a nice day everyone. :-)

Leonard can, indeed, hit those low notes, but the video link you provided is "private" and thus "unavailable".

I very much like your sketch of Leonard smiling with his charming crooked smile and that lovely glint in his eyes! It cheers me and makes me smile, too. Thank you!

hei lisa
the youtube video has once more been switched into the public domain, and will likely stay there for a short while. while at it, a little more concert footage for anyone needing a fresh reminder of leonard's humour.

https://youtu.be/_VxK5d8vzfo (rehearsal: french song)
https://youtu.be/d3akD_v36Pg (concert encore)

[leonard speaking]
"thank you very much friends. thank you for not going home. i'm gonna fire up this little machine here. i don't want you to get alarmed. it goes by itself. it's kind of sophisticated, you probably haven't seen anything like this around here. --- are you humouring me? some kind of compassion for the elderly? you think that's all i can do, don't you - listen to this! --- oh, don't stop, please don't stop! if you stop now i will be plunged back into a confrontation with this audience, with all its abundant opportunities for jubilation. just a little longer, let me get in touch with my outer self. ah, thank you!"

you are frequently far too kind to my attempts at art, lisa - and i love you endlessly for that. because of you i dare to attach a 'portrait' recently painted while drinking too much terres de saint-louis rosé wine. it was a masterpiece when i fell into bed, but metamorphosed during the night into a perfect example of uninspired rubbish.

all the best

I suspect, Geoffrey, that there are one or two wannabe-artists out there who would give anything to be able to produce something like your "perfect example of uninspired rubbish". 8)

Thanks for the heads-up on the video -- I will check it out soon (plus the other one!). In a bit of a rush at the moment...

Cheers!

it might not look too bad in this photo, but when you see it in real life it's depressingly awful. will try to do it again when i get time, maybe go over some charcoal with a rolling pin and add a drop of linseed oil. the shops have started selling liquid charcoal, but it's many more times expensive than paint. i have lots of money, it's not that, i just don't like throwing it out the window. i'd rather buy another bottle of wine. a glass of chardonnay on the table, a blank artboard or canvas on the easel, paganini flowing from the loudspeakers - and who knows what will materialise! try it, if you haven't already done so :-)

you shouldn't really rush about too much. reminds me of leonard when i started rising from his table. i told him i didn't want to use any more of his time. he lifted his right arm, slowly patted the air downwards, and calmly said "easy, there's plenty of time!" :-)

I usually save the wine for after the painting/picture is done -- it tends to impair my motor skills. However, I shall try it your way -- as you say, "who knows what will materialise!". As for the music, I'd more likely opt for Beethoven. Actually, I usually don't have music on when I do artwork -- it distracts me, because I keep focussing on the music, but again, I'll give it a try -- nothing to lose! (except perhaps for a few art supplies...)

I know. I keep telling myself that. I do try (and often, I manage to succeed!), but as you undoubtedly know, every now and then, other things and people can demand attention and action (some of which is mostly unavoidable), when all I really want is to be left alone to quietly do my own thing.

I did get around to watching the two videos -- delightful, thank you!

yes, i do know. the strange thing is that all too often the more free time a creative person gets, the less they actually use it. it just doesn't seem so valuable when one has plenty of it. anyway, i wish other people would show their pictures. it doesn't matter if anyone likes them or not, it's all good - and in any case there are so few people in here that the likelihood of any kind of response is minimal :-)

Is that a challenge? Okay, maybe just this once, so that you don't have to shoulder all the burden around here, all the time! Here's a daisy I did in watercolours. Hope you like it.
