Hello Geoffrey,

I am full of questions today:

Where does "Prayer is translation..." come from?

Is the picture in your most recent post from one of the many journals you referred to?

Your journals and artwork--will they have a life after yours?

[The last question does not concern artistic longevity, it is meant to be practical. Have you ever contemplated where your creations can go when you depart so that others might have the joy of pondering them? Without such planning, everybody loses except Mr. Landfill.]

hello curt.
hope you are keeping well in these challenging times. so good of you to continue appearing on this screen in the corner of my living room.

(1) there are so many interviews, and i am inept at noting where i read things. i cannot always guarantee that quotations are 100% verbatim, but i would never intentionally distort leonard's words. 'prayer is translation' i read or heard a while ago, so believe it is genuine. this time around i lifted it from:

(2) yes, a cheap little notebook i often carry, also a crayon or two. pages ripped out, mostly used for jotting down thoughts.
(3) ha - this is a weird question. no, such contemplations do not inhabit any area of my thinking, and should they begin to do so i fear i would not dare to continue doing anything. there is no organisation in my life, people pass me by as they would a vagrant, an unkempt old man on a bench. i don't think anyone is ever going to be interested in anything i have done.

yes, and it is so appreciated, lisa. however . . .

. . . i live in a small town where not very much happens. at noon every day a passenger ship calls by, parks here for about three hours before continuing its long journey north. it's an opportunity for those of us ålesunders to spend time onboard. we have no interest in traveling, but can drink a coffee in the cafeteria and socialise with tourists and crew - and life becomes a little less humdrum. one could see it as a parallel to this little corner of the internet, could one not? there is also a small library here where down-and-outs often come in, sit down, warm themselves and relax - have never read a book in their lives. also, not everyone in a bus shelter is waiting for a bus. sometimes they're joggers hanging around until the rain stops. and a man buying a cat is not necessarily an animal lover, maybe he just wants to get rid of mice. solongleonard doesn't come here because he likes art, he comes here to unwind after a day knee-deep in the criminal justice system. it is therapeutic for him to mix with stimulating law-abiding citizens where he can impress with his propensity for wordplay. that's fair enough, i would never criticise that, i actually like him, no matter what anyone else says. you and curt are decent folks, too - and not for a second would i doubt your sincerity when you write nice things. but two people out of eight billion is not a very high percentage.

As Leonard Cohen put it:

...here's to the few, who forgive what you do
And the fewer who don't even care...

I'd much rather have two close friends than dozens of mere acquaintances (let alone billions!). It is the quality of my interactions with others, not the quantity, that really matters to me.

As for what others do (and why), unless it affects me directly and negatively, I really don't care.

I sincerely hope that you are reconsidering this activity at this particular point in time. While a very small social circle may not appeal to your nature, it is highly recommended at the moment, and for good reason, I think.

I really enjoy reading little vignettes like Geoffrey's, "I live in a small town where not much happens..." In just a handful of sentences, barely strung together, so much is conveyed about where he lives, the people that live there, and what the writer thinks about it all. I can imagine visiting that village some day and strolling around, checking out the benches until I come to the one with the man with a notebook. I would say, "First we take Manhattan," and he would look up and utter the proper response, and then regale me with some of his stories. [Sadly, when someone of retirement age talks about doing something "some day," it rarely ever comes to be.]

Close friends are difficult to come by, I could count mine on the fingers of one hand. If someone told me they had a dozen close friends, I would think to my self, "he has no close friends". If you have one or two close friends, you are blessed. Lisa's Leonard quote from a brilliant, but underappreciated, song speaks for itself.

Re; Decent folks. One's accomplishments in life--or lack thereof--usually has little to do with decency. To be thought of as decent by another is a great compliment, Geoffrey. "He was a decent man" always makes a compelling epitaph.

i will write soon. just wanted to give an update on the slimming course in which i have been involved. up until a week or two ago we (myself and a dozen or so ladies) met every thursday evening to discuss our progress, or lack thereof. the leader - a registered dietitian nutritionist and qualified trainer - started every meeting by weighing everyone, writing it down in a book, and then we sit around some tables that have all been put together to make one large one.a lot of inspiring conversation ensues, information about food and exercise mostly.

anyway, after all this virus uneasiness we no longer interact physically; instead we meet via a webinar. my weight this morning was 94 kilos, which means i have come down 9 kilos since new year's day when i was 103 kilos - and i don't think that's a bad result at all. i go for a long walk almost every day, usually to town, maybe buy some fresh salmon. a lot of the shops are closed, there's very few people around, and several of the ones who dare to leave their homes wear face masks - a real science fiction movie. i have only had one visitor since all this began, and social invitations have completely stopped. sometimes i wonder whether i've died and gone to heaven, but when i see that leonard's nowhere around i realise i'm still stuck at square one.

Being an honest sort of person, I have to say that I seriously question the judgement (or lack thereof) of anyone who would post a drawing of Hitler on this forum and at this particular point in time. Isn't there enough unpleasantness in the world right now? I am sorry to be so blunt, but to do such a thing strikes me as being very insensitive and tasteless.

you refer to the virus? good to know you are concerned. in a since deleted post i was recently called a 'drama queen' after showing a picture of the face masks i had bought (this country has one of the highest per capita cases). don't worry, lisa, this will pass, and you will likely survive. just be extra careful during the coming weeks.

as for hitler, he was a subject upon which leonard spoke numerous times, in his novels, poems and music. try to relax, maybe smile a little more, and not make historical figures more important than they need be :-)

I was wrong not to be concerned previously about the virus. I seriously underestimated covid-19 and its impact, not only on people's health, but on so many aspects of society, all of which are affecting so many people in so many different ways. I know that all of this will eventually pass, I am being extremely careful, and I am not concerned about my own survival, but the state of the world is currently a mess, and that does concern me.

Cheerio.
