It Was You

IT WAS YOU

I need to write to you now
Not of rape, brutality or war
But of the coming peace
That you and I dreamed of

In Torquay, Sorrento, Cowes
about Torah, Jesus and life
Of Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler
And who really was the best!

You led me here Old Man
By Infinity, Israel, Rocky II
Chaplin, Campbell, Gunston
AJAX or Ti Amo's in Carlton

Your gentleness, kindness
Your Shema at night's end
Of how to drive a manual
Of the mystery of Woman

You captured poetry in books
In a smile, a dog's gait, in love
You handed it to me at Seaford
At a jazz concert when I was 12

In '93 it was you who saved me
The ECT, the meds? It was you!
You took my photo many times
Wrote that letter before you died

Eighteen years have passed Dad
Not much has changed in my life
But I have, and so has the World!
Remember, I told you my dream

Then I had Cohen and even Dylan
You once wrote 'You may disagree'
To me in a poem I still have today
It is true Dad I could - I even still do

But it is the dreaming we shared
The talks and concerts and love
Gibran said you were the bow
I am the arrow that you sent forth

And in all that the living encounter
Every galactical trip or footy game
We take you and Heaven within us
Every step and leap of our journey

Love,
Your Son Adam x
