Streets Of Fire - Poem/Song about England Riots 2011

Post by geoff+evans »

Hi - this is a poem/song lyrics about the recent England Riots (2011):

Streets Of Fire

There’s a wind of hate - blowing through this town
Word on the street – something’s going down
Life’s getting harder - most every day
Pray to your god – that you don’t lose your way

There’s a darkness – falling in the sky
Got no job – they don’t hear my cry
Got a stack of bills – sitting on my floor
Got a bad ass mother – knocking at my door

Rivers of blood – running down the road
Hatred for your brother – is a heavy load
Everybody’s saying – going to be a war
Stay home mama - and lock your door

Well it’s black on black
White on white
A burning in the blood
And a raging in the night
And I’m just walking through - streets of fire
Streets of fire - streets of fire

Hatred’s stirring – in streets of fire
Flames are burning - in streets of fire
Tide is turning - in streets of fire
We’re all hurting - in streets of fire

There’s a wave of anger – crashing down
Future is dying – bleeding on the ground
Is it a crime of hatred – a crime of fear
Is your soul dead – will you shed a tear

There’s a ray of light – shining from your eyes
In the name of peace – can’t you hear our cries
Love and hope – is all I pray
I’ll walk again - with you one day

Well it’s black on black
White on white
A burning in the blood
And a raging in the night
And I’m just walking through - streets of fire
Streets of fire - streets of fire

It don’t matter bout your colour
Cos a brothers still a brother
And I’m just walking through - streets of fire
Streets of fire - streets of fire
Streets of fire
Let this day be ....
..... the start of a new beginning

Hi G&E and welcome to the forum

I'd like to hear this ... it has a very strong musical quality just reading it as a poem and not knowing the tune.

Hi Cate,
Thanks for your comments. It was so awful seeing those events of the riots unfold live on TV.
I was playing my acoustic at the time and the song just popped into my head and I started playing it live to the events on TV.
Going to record it so will put it on YouTube.
I had the same experience when I saw those terrible scenes of starving children in East Africa and I wrote/recorded A Song For Africa - Let it Rain - that's on this notice board if you'd care to hear it?
Let this day be ....
..... the start of a new beginning

I was going to ask if you had been involved in the riots ... it was frightening to see how long the riots went on for.

Last year Toronto hosted a g20 event in our downtown core and there were some riots. I was not in the same area as the rioting but I was downtown in what seemed like a 'safe area' with friend celebrating.

It was very surrealistic ... helicopters with search lights, no traffic, stores closing up, the scent of burning - we could hear this beating sound which turned out to be the sound of officers batons on their shields ... at one point a large group of security wearing yellow moved through our area on bikes (I have no idea why as we were no where near the demonstrations).
It was ... disconcerting.

Hi Cate - no I live in Wales (Mumbles, Swansea) and we didnt have any riots of any sort here.
It was unbelievable - though, social unrest and anarchy is bubbling beneath the surface all over the world.
The politicians at all levels just can't control or manage anything it seems - in the UK they were mostly too busy filling in their expense forms!!
It's a disgrace - the man and woman in the street work hard to bring up families and live as best they can, while the great and the good just seem to line their pockets with our cash!!

Nice words .... How about this?

I remember the days if the great unrest
Praying for my soul
Fighting with the best
Money in my wallet can only buy me bread
Got no chair to sit
Got no pillow for my head

Country is in ruins
workers all on stop
Ships n trains aint moving
Nothing in the shops
Unions told us straight
We gotta stand n fight
Brothers stand together
for what you think is right

..... Your turn (need a chorus)
Any ideas? Xx
