Daylight Wasted Time

Post by John K. » Tue Mar 30, 2010 12:59 am

I'm going south for the winter
To sit out in the sun
And think about my home
And all the things I've left undone
The warm air and the breeze
Help me pretend I'm doing fine
Try not to look down at my watch
During Daylight Wasted Time

Somewhere there are people
Who play the most important part
Of deciding when we'll sit or stand
And when the clocks will stop and start
They print up the new calendars
But they won't get their hands on mine
I'm keeping it to myself
Now that I'm on Daylight Wasted Time

I got lost on my way to work
When the traffic slowed me down
I pulled off the road to find a map
I didn't recognize the town
I thought I'd join the common man
I was parked by the bus line
But off-peak service doesn't come this way
On Daylight Wasted Time

I tried my best to fall forward
Or should I have sprung back
I'm always so confused
Leaning this way, turning like that
I declare my love for you
In a voice blatantly sublime
My words don't make too much sense
When I'm on Daylight Wasted Time

I read that purity of spirit
Was for sale at a special price
They said that it's first come, first serve
But let me give you some advice
The salesman's on commission
Won't post his profit on the sign
Every dime that he brings in is gravy
Throughout Daylight Wasted Time

I've grown tightly into my new skin
But no matter what I do
It doesn't seem to fit too well
Would look better wrapped around you
Maybe then I'd be more comfortable
Watching us in an odd design
Made of eyes and hands and hopes and fears
Hearts, borrowed songs, and time

I respect those who see things differently
Especially when they think well of me
I won't preach to the converted
When I kneel where you can't see
If I had to I'd do it all again
But I'd rather skip it, if you don't mind
The alarm has a pleasant, quiet ring
When you live on Daylight Wasted Time

It might not be a song yet but it is a bloody good poem . I enjoyed reading it so I wouldn't worry too much about adding music !

love it - thanks for the little journey - an oasis in a complicated landscape

Thanks for the kind words.

One of my goals as a songwriter is to deal with serious emotions in a less than totally serious manner.

Over the last few days I've been able to work out the melody in my head, this one was a bit harder than most, usually I hear it as I'm writing but for whatever reason I wasn't much this time around.

Stay tuned (pun intended).

Love,

John K.

Oh, hi.

I've finally recorded a very rough demo of "Daylight Wasted Time". If you'd like to hear it, here's a link:

Hey, John :D ~ Long time! Now, this is a Keys song if I ever heard one. I thought that when I read it, but even moreso after I listened to the upbeat, jaunty guitar and vocals. I like it!

Hi John.

Listened to your song, Loved it! (it reads as a great poem too).

You remind me of Tim Buckley, (Jeff Buckleys father)
He wrote some really good stuff and you brought him to mind when I listened to your song.

John,

This is an excellent song and you sing it very well.

It's a couple years after I wrote this, but today I posted the video of my Madison performance of "Daylight Wasted Time" on Youtube, complete with pre-song banter.
