Pilate In Gaul

Pilate In Gaul
(Quod Scripsi, Scripsi)

I remember hard days in the Jerusalem sun,
Our eagles upon the gates of Zion,
Shields shining with the names of all the gods,
Save one

I stole from their temple,
And minted new coins,
With Roman might and Roman scorn,
I built a reservoir for my delight,
And mingled blood with sacrifice

Oh, I’ll call for water,
And I’ll wash my hands,
There is no King but Caesar,
And I am always Caesar’s friend

I remember a man on trial
He troubled me, that “Leprous One,”
We spoke of truth awhile---
But it was soon over and done,
A good day’s work,
For the Fox and I were reconciled!

Now the water’s warm in the bath,
My wrist flat, the knife in hand,
One last judicious moment,
Then all pretence at an end,
I remember when
I wrote a sign
And would not change it.

Nice poem, SMC. Well thought out and constructed.

Finally.

This is an outstanding poem, SMC. The last stanza in particular is very fine. I hope you post more.

Very graphic....particularly the first two lines.

I welcome you, as well, SMC :D .
