I wonder if anyone has read or heard Leonard Comment on the conection between his songlyrics for "a thousand kisses deep" and this poem by Robert Frost:
Stopping by woods on a snowy evening
Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up the snow
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods of frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy winds and downy flake
The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep,
and miles to go before I sleep,
and miles to go before I sleep.
A thousand kisses deep, and Robert Frost

I am a right bad ass, dankish prince and I love my Violet to bits.
'Macbeth' - Shakespeare
'The History of Mr Polly' - HG Wells
'The Poems of Robert Frost'
I was made to 'study' all of these for my O level exams x number of years ago. At the time I didn't care for Literature but I had to study these works.
It didn't take long to come to appreciate all three and I have revisited Robert Frost's poetry on many occasions.
This particular poem is one of my favourites, together with 'Apple Picking' and one about building a wall between neighbours.
My English teacher allowed us the visualise what was happening and to also comment on the reasons for the events and I thank her for that (still preferred the Maths lessons though)
You have now given me the perfect reason for another revisit

"Stopping By Woods...."
Peter Danielson has touched on just one of many influences in Leonard Cohen's writing. The 10 verse draft ( posted on this site more than two years ago) of "A Thousand Kisses Deep" is infused by Frost's poetry.
I would encourage all readers on this board to read both the poetry of Robert Frost, and his essays/articles on the subject of writing poetry.
He is one of the greatest American poets of the 20th century.
Yours, Andrew.
