THE FAVOURITE GAME... new (hopefuly last) doubt

Post by desperatetranslator »

Hi everyone, having a hard time with this one:

--How's camp? How's Krantz?
--Flourishing. But he'll never make a Compassionate P.

(IN CHAPTER 14, BOOK IV, THE FAVOURITE GAME)
Doubt is: What on earth is "Compassionate P."?

Hey, Jankko, u posted something about a list of ten doubts which cropped up in the Romanian translation and were eventually solved. U think u could post them or mail them to me direct? thanks so much ever, best

I can help you with this as I happen to be reading this book right now -- and loving every word.

On the fourth page of Book IV, Breavman is w/Tamara at her tiny apartment and:

"They founded the Compassionate Philistines one night, and limited the membership to two. It was devoted to the adoration of the vulgar. They celebrated the fins of the new Cadillac, defended Hollywood and the Hit Parade, wall-to-wall carpets, Polynesian restaurants, affirmed their allegiance to the Affluent Society."

Twenty-two pages later, your quote appears:

"How's camp? How's Krantz?"
"Flourishing. But he'll never make a Compassionate P."

He'll never make it into their 2-person club of Compassionate Philistines.
