THE HYDRA MEETUP, JUNE 10-12, 2011

OK, folks, it's time to make decisions. I have opened the list of participants, it's here: http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/backtohydra.html

Some essential information is on the same page. I am sure we will get more useful travel hints from members who have been to the island recently.

Please let me know by email (at ja@nebula.fi) if you plan to join us. I will add your name(s) to the list (also let me know if you don't want to show your complete name).
To make things easier for myself, I only list people who sign up for the meetup by email. Please also mention your homeland!

The list is for information only. If you have to change your plans later, just let us know, and we will remove you from the list.

Dear people,
Good New year to everybody!
I am quite new in the forum, and I do not know anybody of you, but I have been a LC fan since a long time.
Yet I am going to Hydra too, I' ll take along my guitar so we can sing some songs.
of LC. Are there any participants form Holland with a good voice so that we can study some songs
with two voices?
Please let me know by mail;

This is certainly a Happy New Year message, Jarkko!

Hydra in 2011 sounds tempting.... :?:

Very good to know in cold times like now, that Hydra is waiting for us:
no cars, sunshine, good food, mindblowing views, sing-alongs in the harbour, a fiest for all senses ......
jarkko, i have a wish:
maybe we could manage to get the movie favourite game and show it in the open-air cinema???
(no idea if it´s a good movie)

Some members have asked me to estimate how much it would cost for them to spend a weekend on Hydra. There is no definitive answer to this question - the budget is up to your own preferences, but here are some hints anyway.

- You have to reserve a flight to Athens. I often use http://www.kayak.com to get a list of available choices (with ticket prices). However, for the cheap airlines (like Easyjet), you have to connect with their own websites!

- Remember that early reservations guarantee you the lowest prices. However, your bookings are at your own risk - you will not get a refund if you have to cancel. Take a travel insurance to decrease this risk.

- For instance from Helsinki (Finland) I expect to pay 200-250 eur for a return flight to Athens.

- From the airport you will have to take metro/underground (around 5 eur) or bus (3-4 eur) to Piraeus.

- From Piraeus to Hydra by Dolphin to Hydra (http://www.hellenicseaways.gr). Return ticket 50-60 eur (summer schedule & prices not yet available)

- To find accommodation on Hydra, just google “Hotel Hydra”, “Pension Hydra” and “Bed and breakfast Hydra”. Most of the hotels and pensions are between 50-100 eur per night per room. Breakfast is extra. You may also find some cheaper b&b offers. Early June is low season, and the prices are cheaper than two weeks later. You may also come without reservations and go around to ask for the best last-minute offers. There are also houses for rent (good alternative for a group!).

- Dinners at restaurants: let’s say 10-15 eur (and more if you go to the best restaurants). The prices are higher than in the mainland because everything has to be delivered to the island by boat.

- I have not been to Hydra since June 2009, so I don’t know if the current economic crisis in Greece has resulted in lower prices because diminishing number of tourists. Comments, anybody?

Happy New Year everyone.
Prices haven't changed that much since 2009 for Hydra, you can surely find better offers now (though we had VAT increase three times in just one year).Things change so quickly, we expect a difficult year in all terms, so I think prices will be even lower for accommodation and restaurants till June, given that Athenians have forgotten for good short getaways to Hydra after a storm of salary cuts and job insecurity.

Here is a link for your accommodation:

I'll be glad to help you if you need further information,

Best wishes,

Sophia

Hydra travelers

I live in Florida, but will probably leave for Greece, out of New York, traveling alone.

Hoping to spend some extra time around the meet-up weekend.

Love to hear from like-minded travelers.

I am hoping to travel out from London (England) during the week before and maybe return the following week, perhaps spend a week or ten days there.

It would be lovely to have a travelling companion or companions so if your plans are similar send me a message. Also, as I am travelling alone (I haven't done this before and am a bit of a wimp), it would be great to stay somewhere where other fans are going to be as well, so again messages would be most welcome.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Hydra! I will be flying from Memphis-Detroit, Detroit-Amsterdam, Amsterdam-Athens on June 8/9 with a return on June 18. Enjoy the new year.

I am contemplating booking my room at the Hotel Angelica or Hotel Mistral. If anyone that has been to Hydra has a better recommendation please let me know.

Thanks!

Quick Update (1/3/11) - Decided on the Hotel Mistral after reading glowing reviews.
