Re: Way off topic question - full body scanner at LV airport
I rarely fly anywhere -- maybe once every 5 years? But (rumor mongering alert) "They" have said that the amount of radiation the scanners emit can fluctuate wildly from machine to machine and from time to time. And these "They" estimate that the number of cancers these machines w...

Re: 3-year-old sings Diamonds in the Mine
Oh, I think children naturally gravitate to whatever lyrics resonate with them at whatever time. Perhaps this tyke is struggling with the concept of "no more Oreos for you" which I'm sure we all agree, is one of the most difficult hurdles of toddlerhood. I further theorize that the passion...

Re: Bob Dylan in Limerick
As improbable as it seems, actually came to Charleston West Virginia sometime in the '90s. I had farily good seats and I anticipated enjoying the concert more then I actually did. Dylan looked as though he was ready to fall asleep at any moment the entire time he was on stage. This was during Dylan'...

Al Stewart on tour
I went to Rams Head in Annapolis a couple of weeks ago to see Al Stewart. In case anyone is interested --it's a wonderful venue. My friend and I had some of the worst seats in the house, which were still better then any concert seat I've ever had. It's more of a night club then a stadium which makes...

I'm excited. I've never been to Wisconsin. Can you recommend any hiking trails near Madison?

Re: bee dance
What a fun poem! The holly tree at the foot of our drive way is in full pollen mode -- the challenge is to get into the car without letting in a bee. The bees are more busy then usual this spring in West Virginia. We have a record pollen count this spring. Sitting with my mother UNDER the gazebo at ...

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative
Personally, I have always been attracted to Douglas Adams's solution to the Schrodinger Cat conundrum, as described in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. When the box is opened, the scientists discover no cat at all, dead or alive. Dirk Gently reminisces how he was called in to investigate. H...

Hey! I'm going to shoulder in here and remind everyone that I'M the one who hijacked this thread. Credit/blame where credit/blame is due! (Perhaps my T shirt says more about me then I realized?)

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative
A small, humble clarification: I did not mean to imply that Cohen himself was using any metaphors from the standard model of physics; merely to use this as an example of the limitations of language which require a writer to write in contradictory statements to get at truths between and among vocabul...

My response to developments is gratuitious, but, for what it's worth, here I go anyway:
thanks Wybe. I don't believe efc was capable of appreciating that difference (and I used this example before -- forgive the repetition) between free speech and yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater.

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative
Do you have any (non-mathematical) familiarity with "the standard model" of physics? The standard model contains paradoxes (Schrodinger's Cat comes to mind) which make no narrative sense to us. The math, I'm told, makes sense (not that I have the math chops to agree or disagree with this.)...

That's what I love about this Forum. You never know what you're going to learn! As an avid hiker I have kits similar to this -- but none of mine are this cool, this small and this light!
