I like the album 'The Future'. I like the grim humour in the title track, Democracy and Waiting for the Miracle. Anthem may be more melodic than some of the other tracks, but it's still a pretty grim world view. That we are only able to apprehend the possibility of perfection through its absence. Or...

That was an interesting piece you added to the translation of Cavafy's poem, Dem, but it took some finding. I searched on 'Alexandra Leaving' first, and found all those translations you did from Greek newspapers, which also made very good reading. If anyone else is having trouble finding Dem's artic...

Hi Irene

I should imagine there are as many ways of appreciating Leonard Cohen as there are people who admire his work, and while many will inevitably overlap I doubt if any are identical. We all bring something of ourselves to our appreciation of any artist or given piece of work.

I didn't mean that Please Don't Pass Me By was a manic depressive song, Elizabeth. I meant that the description of the symptoms offered in Ira Nadel's biography certainly seemed to apply to Leonard.

Thanks for all the background to 'Please don't Pass me by', Dem. I had always thought there might be more to it than simply physical blindness, and it was good to have that confirmed. The manic-depressive description certainly seems to fit, doesn't it. I don't know whether to be more sad that Leonar...

I certainly hadn't heard the manic bit before, though it would not surprise me. I read that bit about the worry cells dying off as you grow older too, though I suspect that in Leonard's case they just finally succumbed to all the things he has been blasting them with over the years. He himself menti...

I'm confused. I seem to gather from some of these posts that this interview was taking place on a C&W station, and that Leonard was described as artsy for the benefit of a C&W audience. Yet I distinctly remember reading an article on this site that describes Leonard as 'setting old testament...

Hi Lizzytysh You don't need an OK button to confirm the text colour, just highlight the text you want to change the colour of and then click on the colour you want. By the way, be careful you don't get your Lindas mixed up. There are at least two of us on this site so far. That's why I chose to go w...

I think 'used to be' is the operative phrase there, Dem. He seems to have finally 'grown out of it'. There's nothing either manic or depressive about Ten New Songs.

Hi Elizabeth The emoticons are easy :D Just click on the one you want and it will appear where the cursor is in your text. It won't look like it does in the finished version though :? because of the different codes used :!: If you place the cursor over an emoticon without clicking on it, it will tel...

Hi eeey, I have always assumed that the fault was in me when I had difficulty in undersanding Leonard's work. After all, he spends so much time on them that they have to be right by the time he publishes them, surely? Then I saw the notes published on this site showing his work over the years on Ale...

I can't believe that anyone who had actually listened to Leonard Cohen's songs would describe him as artsy. It sounds to me like a 'cop out' from soneone who finds he doesn't fit easily into any other category, or someone who is fazed by the fact that Leonard's songs are not immediately transparent.

Hi Sandra, Some of Leonard's albums could certainly leave a listener feeling melancholic, especially the early ones. I think the songs themselves cover a wide range of emotions, and the overall effect of the later albums (with the notable exception of 'The Future') is much more mellow/accepting. I t...

Thanks, Jarkko et al, this is much easier on the eyes :D I could never stay around the old board long enough to read all I wanted to before my eyes started complaining.
