Sad/melancolic music

I think Yellowhe has a good point, here. My personal favourite artists include Leonard, Nick Drake, Scott Walker, John Cale, Procol Harum and the great and highly underrated Michael Chapman (who says his songs are more miserable than Leonards!) None of these could be described as particularly cheerf...

Hi Lizzy,
"The Rock Machine Turns You On" was a great CBS sampler album of largely "underground" music. It included the likes of Leonard, Dylan, The Byrds, Spirit, Moby Grape, and The United States of America.

Well, Lizzy let's put it another way, if Leonard's songs were movies I think vritually all of them would get "A" or "X" ratings (using the old terms)! I can't see many getting a "U" certificate. I guess that there might be a few sensitive children who like the melodies,...

Best album of 2006

Anjani "Blue Alert". An exquisite album that has brought a quality of perception back into my life that I doubted I would ever experience again. Listening to this has helped me to fully appreciate "Dear Heather", which (unlike all Leonard's other albums) I had only played a few t...

First Leonard song

The first Leonard song that I heard consciously was "Sisters of Mercy" on "The Rock Machine Turns You On" (Christmas '68, when I was still living with my parents and sister in Streatham, London). I fell instantly in love with it, and it is still my favourite Leonard song. It is f...

Songs from a Cradle

Erm.. "Nightingale" maybe, and perhaps "The Great Event" but absolutely nothing else! (though as Tom suggests, I think Leonard's music might be useful for putting kids to sleep). I'll have to ask Jim Devlin.

Arthur Lee

Sadly, Arthur Lee of Love has died, several weeks after a bone-marrow transplant for leukemia. I'll always treasure the Love concerts with Arthur that I saw (19 in recent years and three in earlier years). I also had the pleasure of meeting him briefly a few times. He always seemed friendly and kind...

Blue Alert

Re the reference to Leonard's wife, I don't think we have to take this too literally (let's say "almost a wife" ). As it happens, I'm pretty certain that Leonard has refererred to Suzanne as his "wife", in the past. Meanwhile, I received my own copy of "Blue Alert" toda...

I realised a long time ago that part of our essential experience of this book is having to cope with with the feelings of longing that we experience while waiting for it. What's the betting that Leonard changes the title back to "The the Book of Blue Chocolate" shortly before publication?!

Belated Birthday Greetings, Leonard!

Okay, I'm late for your Solar Return, so may I be the first to wish you a very Happy Jupiter Return on October 6th! This only happens every twelve years and is the beginning of a whole new cycle of growth and progress (it can also possibly bring financial advantage). Anyway, I wish you all health an...

Merrily, merrily shall I live now

Hi Linda, I've been away from the board for a while, but I seem tointuitively return, when there's some action. Maybe I read your post some time ago, and it left a subliminal impression...in which case I'm guilty of subconscious plagiarism! Nice to know that we've had the same experience though. All...

My "Leonard Quest"

I can't remember if I've posted this before , but here goes...I bought "The Rock Machine Turns You On" around Christmas 1968, and I thought the whole album was a revelation. However, the outstanding track for me was "Sisters of Mercy". I knew it was the most important song I had ...
