CD v. DVD of Live in Dublin?
Which do you prefer as regards Live in Dublin- listening to the CDs or watching the DVD? I find it's a very different experience. Actually, watching the band live is terrifying (but the I've never seen him live and for real). Though interesting. You can feel the terror of the first few songs until h...

Re: The Darkest Leonard Cohen Song
Samson in New Orleans. What makes it so particularly dark is that a thousand people did die, and they really were dishonoured by their country, which didn't even take the trouble to pick up their corpses in some cases. I am guessing that that's a gentler version than the one he originally wrote, too...

Re: 120 years from now
I don't think the question of the history of his impact on musicians and fans is particularly hard to answer- it just comes down to what sources survive and are preferred. They'll presumably use newspaper/magazine reviews of albums, maybe record sales in some format or other, the major biographies, ...

Re: 5 favorite "lines"
This would have to be the 5 favourites off the top of my head, at this instant, rather than a considered response... 'My father said I'm chosen, my mother said I'm not'. 'It's spring and it's summer and it's winter forever' 'Did you really love the city, or did you just pretend?' 'Try me again when ...

Re: When,Where,And What Was The First LC Song You Heard?
I got to know Leonard Cohen in a very Leonard Cohen way- forty years after everyone else, via kd lang. I must have heard LC songs many times throughout my life (I'm 46), including on Shrek I, and I certainly knew the name. When I learned to play the guitar (vaguely) in the late 1980s, my guitar tuit...

Re: The use of Jesus and Christian symbolism
I just wanted to comment on this topic, Lilifyre, because as a Catholic I think are absolutely right about the way LC uses Jesus and Christian symbolism. When LC was young, the Jewishness of Jesus was just being rediscovered, including by Catholics. LC employs Jesus as a Jewish hero. Jews rightly co...

Re: Most Frequently Listened Album
Ten New Songs. I just listen to the whole album over and over. But sometimes I do a short version starting from By Rivers Dark. Second is Popular Problems, and third is Old Ideas. I think I'm one of the few people who prefer LC's later work (though I don't have Dear Heather and have never heard it- ...

Re: any Cohen song you DONT like!?!?
It may sound odd, but I really don't like Chelsea Hotel #2. It was so interesting hearing the #1 version, which I really like, and #2, with its harsh last verse, seems so nasty and vicious. Though the way he does it on Live in Dublin is good- the last verse sounds like 'I don't even think of you tha...

Thank you, Leonard Cohen
It occurred to me that now that LC is 80, it might be worth saying something to him that it won't be possible to say for ever. (I understand people on this forum who know him will pass such things on to him as appropriate.) So I wanted to say thank you to Leonard for documenting the passionate inten...

Re: Did I Ever Love You - "major misstep"?!
This is the song I play most often on this album. I could get drunk on it. As soon as I have finished it I often play it again immediately. The female doubling acts as the sort of ghostly 'voice in one's head' asking the questions over and over that one asks about a regretted relationship. I think i...

Re: Cohen's religious roots
I would love a thread on Cohen's use of Catholic imagery (being Catholic myself). It seems to me that, while Judaism is Cohen's religion and Zen his preferred form of religious discipline, Catholicism is his Other (more recently the specific imagery of Catholicism has been replaced to some degree by...
