Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

TineDoes, thank you for the links. Tori Amos does an acceptable job on FBR, and it is one of the better covers, but in my opinion, still a cover. Any cover of that song seems more like someone reading someone else's diary or old love letters than "owning" the song. Just my way of relating to the son...

Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

Thanks for your input, John. I'm not familiar with "Priests" or "Song of Bernadette". I'll have to look them up on YouTube. As for the Webb Sisters version of "If It Be Your Will", I definitely agree. I still prefer Leonard's version of that song, but having heard the Webb Sisters in concert last fa...

Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

The other day I happened to be perusing YouTube looking for a version of one of Leonard's songs to post to another forum. I came across Famous Blue Raincoat and decided to listen to several different versions of it, some by Leonard at different times in his career and others by various women....Jenn...

Re: The Faith

Welcome smithdsouza, You can listen to the song on YouTube at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79ImCDjmr4U I know it can be purchased from iTunes. Individual songs are 99 cents (American). I'm not sure what album it is on as I seldom if ever purchase entire albums. It is a truly lo...

Re: The Guests

Very well put, Mat. Your explanation goes far in explaining the connectedness of so many of Leonard's songs. They flow from the same source, but like each drop of water, they are both identical to each other and unique in and of themselves. Each song/poem is like a deep pool. The deeper you go the m...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Hi Remote 1. I'm not absolutely sure just where I heard/read about the phrase "go clear" referring to the Scientology meaning. I'm thinking it was in an interview of one of Leonard's old friends....possibly Irving Layton. I have no idea where to even begin looking for the interview. I have this quir...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Remote 1 and Holydove, as for the phrase "going clear", I had heard/read somewhere else that Leonard did indeed use the phrase to refer to the term as used by Scientology. In looking over the lyrics again, and bringing in the substitution of "path" for "way", perhaps what Leonard is getting at (and ...

Re: Funeral Music

Oh, one other thought.........As I said, I've given this some thought. You may want to burn a CD or 2 with the songs your mother would like played so that when the time comes, there's no mad dash to find just the right songs to be played. Now if I can get off my rear and get that done..... I ...

Re: Funeral Music

Hi Vicomtesse. I suppose I'm not alone in wanting Leonard's songs played at my funeral. Definitely, I would want Hallelujah and ending with Closing Time. In between, (not sure of the order) I would also like: If It Be Your Will Who By Fire Sisters of Mercy The Faith The Window Story of Isaac (for ve...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Hi all. Sorry, I haven't been following this thread all that much lately. I've been spending a lot of time enjoying a treasure of Leonard's work gifted me my another fan here. I'll leave it to my benefactor to reveal or not reveal himself. I'll just say that I have a true TREASURE and have not been ...

Re: Lines that get you every time

The other song that's been going thru my head lately is "Famous Blue Raincoat". 2 sets of lyrics stand out for me:
And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.

I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.

Re: Lines that get you every time

2 songs have been playing over and over in my head recently for completely different reasons. First off, with the catastrophe going on in the Gulf of Mexico, "The Future" seems eerily too true. I'm heartsick about this....the loss of life, human and animal all in the name of corporate greed. I keep ...

Re: My first time...

Hi Rocketqueen, I'm sort of at the other end of the spectrum from you. I didn't "discover" Leonard until just a few short years ago. When I was your age, I listened to his type of music exclusively. How I missed the Man himself is still a mystery to me. I knew the songs Suzanne, So Long Marianne, an...

Re: Two sins within the song "Hallelujah"

Steven, I agree for someone to use his/her power with no regard to the effect on others is a horrible example. But I think you will find that the Biblical personalities I referred to and others did have to deal with the consequences of their behavior. It may not be spelled out completely in the Bibl...

Re: Two sins within the song "Hallelujah"

Seadove and Steven, this points out a few of the criteria that differ between the Jewish and the Christian interpretations of the Bible in general and the Messiah in particular. Most, if not all, of the Patriarchs, from Abraham on, were very mortal men with very human frailties. They were not perfec...
