Re: Clothing Time

Dr. H Guy, from the pictures on your site, I'd say those designers missed the mark miserably in trying to capture Leonard's style. I had to LOL at the V-neck w/shorts worn with dress shoes and black socks. Geesh! It couldn't look any worse with sandals and socks. And that hat that's supposed to be s...

Re: i don't get it

Poetic license. You either get it or you don't. If it has to be spelled out to you, then you don't get it and probably never will. Just consider the old adage, "Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to relive it."

Re: Do not cry any more!

I'd say it depends on the context and the man. As far as I'm concerned, in the context of any of Leonard's songs and coming from him, it is appropriate, but that's just my opinion.

Re: Leonard's Voice

Hi Mary B. I failed to mark the CDs that had the problems, so it's possible that we are thinking of the same one for the overly low and/or off key. I just this morning finished the first round of listening to all the gems in this treasure. It has taken quite a long time to do so, but very well worth...

Re: Clothing Time

We all know and love Leonard's fedora. Well, maybe not ALL of us. Thought I'd share this little video clip. The kitten is definitely a Leonard fan but i don't think his mother shares his taste in music or fashion. Poor baby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mNB_VG_shc He did get some consolation, lat...

Re: Leonard's Voice

Since I was the recent recipient of a treasure of Leonard's concerts, recorded over several decades, I have noticed that his voice has actually gotten much stronger in the last 10-15 yrs. In several of the concerts from the 80s and 90s, he seems to be struggling to maintain a range that appeared qui...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Humbled, it was not Holydove, but I, Lilifyre who responded to your post. My main objection to your post was your statement: I believe that trying to equate Buddhist compassion with that of Judaism or equating Leonard Cohen’s songs with a deep base in Judaism denigrates both Buddhism and Cohen, maki...

Re: Two sins within the song "Hallelujah"

Hi Lili, The polarities of behavior/emotional disposition (in some of the finest tradition of artistic temperment/excess) can be either congruent or not, arguably. Would not speak against the opportunity and possibility of redemption for almost any human (kingly or not), but recognize that bottomin...

Re: Two sins within the song "Hallelujah"

Hi, It's incongruous that our sinner, David, composed Psalm 23, etc. Or is it not? :) How is that "incongruous"? David was a human being. He made mistakes. He transgressed. He gave in to his ego and out of his desire for another man's wife, had the man killed (actually sent him on a suicide mission...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Humbled, thank you for your input, however, I must disagree with your position. Your assessment of religions other than Buddhism is based on a lack of knowledge of those religions. You point out man-made revisions to those religions as fact, instead of scratching beneath the surface to find the trut...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

One of the things that I so love about Leonard, is his way of finding the positive in all forms of spirituality. He refuses to give hatred a foothold. One of my favorite lines of his is: When hatred with his package comes, you refuse delivery." These are obviously more than just lyrics to fit a song...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Holydove, thanks for responding. You have been missed :) You've given a lot to "digest" here....quite a feast, if you will. My response may seem a bit disjointed so I hope you can follow what I have to say. I'm not entirely certain I follow my own thoughts at time ;-) You mention the concept of "lov...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

The phrase: "when you planned to go clear" as used in Famous Blue Raincoat, seems to refer to where (mentally/emotionally) the "adversary" or the 2nd man in the love triangle is when he gave "Jane" the lock of his hair. It only concerns Leonard or the song's speaker in a way to refer to what was hap...

Re: Favorite LC song RIGHT NOW

Most recently for me it's been Famous Blue Raincoat and Nancy. Both so haunting. Give me a week or 2 and it will be something else. I just can't stick to one "favorite" for more than a few weeks but since there are so many great ones to pick from, that's fine.

Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

Hi Lili, the Webb Sisters "If it Be Your Will". All good things, John E John, you mentioned the Webb Sisters version of "If it be Your Will". I was just listening to that version from the concert tour last year. I knew I liked that version but it is only now that I can identify what it is that make...
