Re: California people

Heh, that's a long running joke I use to my wife's annoyance. After saying San Francisco, I sometimes tack on "or as the locals call it; 'Frisco."

Re: California people

I'm in the Bay Area too, so definitely in for a SF gathering, although I've also headed down to LA for all things Cohen in the past.

Re: KD Lang sings Hallelujah

I love her cover of Hallelujah, by far my favourite to date.

Awhile ago, there was an article which stated that Leonard had commended KD Lang's version. He also struggled with his own version of "Light as the Breeze" and really liked what Billy Joel had done with it.

Re: Leonard Cohen: TOUR 2008

Hey, I used to live in Toronto, and considered Ontario "East Coast". The way east stuff was considered "Maritimes". East Coast Canada was in line with East Coast US (in spirit as well as longitude). Central Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan) are so different from Ont/Quebec that we didn't want to be gr...

Re: Leonard Cohen: TOUR 2008

Hey, I was just thinking...is it going to be the beginning of Feb, or the end of Feb. Because if it's the end of Feb, Feb will seem like a looooong month.

Re: Sony-BMG Releasing Several Leonard Cohen CDs Feb 1

That's a really good price. I need a new Cohen Live, mine's stuck in my car CD player, and I'm selling the car, but too lazy to remove the seat, remove the CD player and perform surgery :)

Re: I'm Your Man Trailer makes teenagers laugh hysterically

Yeah, I think in my quick review of I'm Your Man, I mentioned how I thought Leonard was going to die horribly in the end with all the foreshadowing and film school stuff. It's a great movie when you're preaching to the choir, but I could see why it seems overblown to the casual listener. I enjoy Dea...

Re: Where has he been all my life?

Well, welcome, Esther! You're fortunate that they have recently re-released Leonard's first three albums with new material. My first Cohen album was the Essential, which will eventually be rendered redundant as I try to fill in the holes. If you latch on to certain pieces on Essential, I'd suggest p...

Re: Where has he been all my life?

Welcome, Mnkyface! Leonard was just at Stanford University in October for a conversation with Philip Glass. Anjani, his girlfried who has set a number of poems to song for her CD, Blue Alert, was at Cafe Du Nord earlier (or perhaps) last year. I've seen Leonard twice in person, but have not heard hi...

Nothing goes with a naked lady quite like a salt shaker...
Fascinating. As a huge processor of salt (I run...a lot), I can't stop all the imagery. Suddenly, my electrolytes seem unbalanced.

Re: Leonard in Stanford with Philip Glass

Leonard mentioned, by the way, that he had written music for "I Can't Make the Hills" before Philip Glass set the poem to music, at our conversation. He now prefers Philip's version over his. I have to say, that was the finest piece, outside of the string solos. Of course, a lot of that had to do wi...

Re: Leonard in Stanford with Philip Glass

Hrm. I didn't come away feeling like I enjoyed the show. I really enjoyed the solos, and listening to the recordings of Leonard reading his poems. I also liked the presentation of the drawings, and thought that aspect worked well. But for the singing parts, I found the words very difficult to follow...
