Re: Who's Sitting Where in Las Vegas?

I haven't booked our room yet - and won't until fairly close to departure time. Living in L.A. we go to Las Vegas often. Mid-week specials are rife for this time of year (at Travelocity or Expedia) - and we should be able to book into the Luxor (our hotel of choice) for around $75.00/night in an air...

Re: greetings from Santa Monica.....

Leonard doesn't live anywhere near Santa Monica, he lives in the Larchmont section of Los Angeles just south of Hollywood. And his "hometown" is Montreal. Other than that, have a good time on the pier and enjoy the local "crazies" on the Venice boardwalk. FYI: Venice beach is the second most popular...

Re: What made you choose your posting name?

... Really boring and mundane but here it is: My initials are JAS (Jazz) and my street address is 4111.
Hence jazz4111 so wish it could have been more entertaining and original - but it is easy to use and easy to remember - I've used it other sites as well. Cheers!

Re: A flavor of Hydra

Actually Lizzie, And I don't think this has changed since I last lived there - there is no mail delivery for Foreigners on Hydra - but there certainly is for the Greek locals (Dem?) or as my old friend George Lialios asked me when I saw mail being pushed through his door slot one day "Do you really ...

Re: The Fall Tour 2009 in USA now announced

Hooray! I booked 4 $150. tickets for the Las Vegas concert last Friday. My partner and I will meet up with our dear friend Lindsey from San Francisco - it was his house I rented on Hydra in 1973 and we've been friends ever since. His b.f. Robert will accompany him. We'll spend a couple of days there...

Re: The Leonard/Janis thread

Thanks for the update/correction, Eskimo - I knew of Mimi Farina and was a fan of her first husband's book: "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me" (by Richard Farina & Thomas Pynchon) - BTW Brice Marden (American master minimalist artist) who owns four houses on Hydra and is friendly with LC, di...

Re: The Leonard/Janis thread

In 1970 I was such a fan of Janis' (who I saw in concert three times) that my Mother actually called me the day she died to make sure I was okay and offer her condolences - so we've hit a nerve here albeit an old one. I believe Leonard wrote the song as a tribute to Janis Joplin. And he was not alon...

Re: Leonard Cohen Night - BBC4 (UK) - June 19

I lived on Hydra for 18 months between 1973 ands 1976 - 9 months was the longest at one time. Met all the "usual suspects" - stay in touch with many of them. Still go back every year or two - was there for 2 weeks last September/October. It's like Henry Miller said of Hydra "Hydra ... is like the pa...

Re: Leonard Cohen Night - BBC4 (UK) - June 19

Yes, Hydriot, you're right it is Alexis Bolens, who in spite of his "rogue" status and questionable (long past) career - was and is a dear friend of mine. Half Greek, half Swiss, he lived on Hydra for many years - recently married Bill Cunliffe's ex-wife Lena and frequently visits Hydra. BTW Axel Jr...

(I carried LC's old friend Hazel's video camera with me - and stayed with our mutual friend Kati in Manhattan. Haz...

Re: Phil Spector Convicted of Murder

Live from Los Angeles: Phil Spector who had been free on bail pending the conclusion of his second trial - had that bail revoked and was remanded into custody immediately after the jury rendered its verdict and pending sentencing next month. He is in jail in Los Angeles right now. Lizzie, Mr. Specto...

Re: Cohen and Brel?

As I am also a big Jacques Brel fan, I'll share this little story: A long, long time ago while visiting a friend in Montreal who was also friends with LC (and was himself a marvelous singer/songwriter) he told me of a conversation he had with Leonard about Brel - he asked LC what he thought of Brel ...
