Re: The poetry of "Ten New Songs"

Opposites “need” each other, …and at that interface, that wounded dawn is a transient co-existent moment in a day. It does not last all day, or all night, just occasionally somewhere in between. Then back to Babylon or Boogie Street we go! Yet he/we remember that moment of fusing opposition; and wi...

Out of the great choices allready made, I second:
One of us cannot be wrong,
Light as the Breeze,
Alexandra Leaving
And I would like to add:
The window

Re: The poetry of "Ten New Songs"

Mat, Thank you for your giving very deep vision on the song. Its meaning for me gets more layers all the time. Question: Darkness in this Neo-Platonic sense is “unknowing”, Do you see this darkness to be the same as 'my Babylon'? What do you think 'my Babylon' other than a place of darkness could be...

Re: The poetry of "Ten New Songs"

DBCohen, I read your post and all your fine biblical references with great interest. I look forward to Mat's mystical theme's. Awaiting that I would like to give my very short interpretation of the Song. In this song I see Leonard experiencing his life as being in exile, wandering in unknown territo...

Re: The Guests

This is how I see humankind's expulsion from the Garden of Eden. We existed in that garden, every need fulfilled, wanting for nothing. Yet this is a step we must take or die. It is a time of sorry and joy. Lili, that's lovely. I had never seen it that way. Then we must take that step, it is a step ...

Re: The poetry of "Ten New Songs"

Mat, looking forward to reading what you have to say about this song. Who was waiting who was hunting? I took this to be evil itself, Satan. But I can imagine that it could be God wanting to hunt the narator out of Babylon. Babylon, for the little I know about it, being seen as the biblical apocalyp...

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative

B4real, The classical composor Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992 Paris) was born with the gift of seeing colors when he heard music, though he said that no one ever believed him. The cord E-major (I think that is the cord referred to in 'Hallelujah') he saw as the color red.

Could anyone give the links to the threads of these discussions?

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative

I almost always have a plan when I start but inevitably the work finds a life of its own and I just go with the flow and follow along the path in the direction it leads me. Hi B4real, I had a great drawing teacher and she used to say 'Let the drawing tell you what it needs!'. From interviews I have...

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative

Interesting comparison isn't it? Yes very. Thank you for all the very interesting information about Cohen's art. I know it from the Book of Longing. I never made the connection with Matisse's or Cocteau's drawings. Brilliant. Do you mind the tread having turned into something else? The Dance by Mat...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Thank you Humbled and Holydove for the very interesting and detailed references you have given for the images in Anthem. Maybe I missed it, or it is too obvious, but I did not read that in general the ‘dove’ is known as the symbol for ‘peace’. In this stanza it relates to ‘the wars’, all wars. Buyin...

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative

he says " I am interested in my internal landscape and just paint pictures of them" B4real, Just wondering? Would you imagine those internal landscapes to be more like impressionist paintings (Monet or Seurat) where contrasting colors are used in order to get the vivid effect you spoke of earlier, ...
