Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Hi guys, sorry to be pedantic but this is the correct line according to the files: "So don't look down the ground is gone, there's no one waiting anyway" and this is the correct line according to The Little Black Songbook: "So don't look down the ground is gone, there's no one waving anyway" Hi B4r...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Holydove, Remote1, Thank you both for explaining your ideas about this song so extensively. So good to read. Remote1 for your explanation about sex being predominantly a spiritual experience and about the 'little deaths'. As regards the spiritual side being 'a wordless supposition'; you are of cours...

Re: Meryl Streep quotes Leonard Cohen at Barnard Commencement

MaryB, It would have been much better if Meryl had quoted Leonard correctly. Would you rather she had not mentioned him at all? It makes me happy to knowing she obviously thinks about the meaning of Leonard Cohens words.

Re: Something Positive - Something Negative

Oposites as the force of life. The early Greek Philosopher Heraclitus said that the struggle of opposites is the father of all things. The (Dutch) philosopher Spinoza defined the unity of opposites in his work ‘Ethica’. He says, as far as I understand it, that the unity of opposites is the organism ...

Lizzy, Thank you for giving Leonards empathies. I Hope you have a good day at work. I went and listened to the whole of speech. Well worth it. Like your crack! Re: Meryl Streep quotes Leonard Cohen at Barnard Commencement

Thank you so much bridger15 for posting this link with Meryls Streep's speach. I agree with everything Lizzy had to say. The quote was very appropriate in het speach about women and their oppertunities in this world that come through the cracks. She knows Leonard, she obviously listens to what he ha...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Remote1, Again a very clear explanation of your interpretation on the Smokey life. So nice to hear from you. I've no questions just some comments. I think that as is often the case with Leonard Cohen, the spiritual and the sexual are merged, Yes surely, and the lyrics will therefore speak to whichev...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Holydove, So good to read your thoughts on The Smokey life. The connection to Buddism in the lines both you and I quoted is clear and you have explained it beautifully. "Remember when the scenery started fading; I held you till you learned to walk on air. So don't look down, the ground is gone. . ."...

Re: Favorite LC song RIGHT NOW

I love "The night comes on " too; in fact, as I posted elsewhere, it was the first Leonard Cohen song I fell in love with, which started me listening to his songs. I particularly love the last verse - the crickets, the vesper bell and "the cat's curled asleep in his chair". Very cosy and comforting...

Re: Favorite LC song RIGHT NOW

but now it keeps going round and round in my head... The Smokey lif is indeed a beautiful song. It sung in my head quite some time ...Light enough ...To let it go... My favourite right now is: 'The night comes' on and this line repeats in my head: I wanted the night to go on and on... But she says ...

Re: Are Leonard Cohen's lyrics influenced by Buddhism?

Will be back soon with my thoughts on the Smokey Life... Remote1 and Holydove, I am Very much looking forward to your posts about The Smokey life and Buddism. To me the chorus of this song is like a mantra that can be used to free oneself from difficult thoughts and situations. So I imagine it to r...

I had to go and pick my 'insured shipment' tickets up at the local postoffice using i.d. because we were not home when they were offered.

Re: The Guests

The inner door flies open One by one they enter there It is clear that the guest go through one at the time. This makes me think of another song that Leonard wrote: 'The innermost door' - Anjani Thomas sings it on Blue Alert. This song is about saying goodbye at the innermost door. Through these inn...
