Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's poetry and novels

I finished "The Favourite Game", and nope, there was no twist at the end that made me want to reascend my previous post. If you have read it, that will come as no surprise. I loved this book so much. In many ways, it has made Leonard more real to me than anything else. It is a picture of him that sh...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Jean, thank you for your thoughts on The Stranger Song. I have gone from loving it like I was struck by lightening, to realizing that are so many other songs Leonard has written that are also just as good and in parts maybe better, to rediscovering how much I loved it to begin in. Maybe that is in t...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Alan- Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about The Stranger Song! It is good to know that I am not the only one. The main reason I felt that way is that I have never seen it elevated or discussed so much like Avalanche or Famous Blue Raincoat or a half dozen other songs, including the ones ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

B4- So glad you are feeling better. I wanted to say something about winter being the season we all seem to get sick, but then I remembered you are in summer there! 4 suggested we discuss Songs of Leonard Cohen because of the 50th anniversary. We haven't yet heard from everyone about where they were ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's poetry and novels

Hi Me again... I am on page 183 (in my UK edition) of The Favourite Game.... I am still surprised how much I like this book! I guess I shouldn't be... since I continue to love everything Leonard Cohen has given us. But, I was sort of lead to believe that this book wasn't as good as I can now see tha...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

PS-- Bev...I hope you are feeling better now... and Alan, I loved your "It's 2:30 in the morning, the beginning of January" post... Jean... I hope you are well also! We haven't heard from you regarding 1967... As for me in 1967- "I was 9 years old". I lived in Canada, and it was our centennial. My d...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

4- That is very interesting. "Eye of the Beholder" .... but I wonder if Leonard ever saw that episode and if it was the genesis of "the bandage pulls away." I think you are onto something there. I am not sure if Leonard saw that episode, because I was told long ago that there are no original thought...

Re: Leonard-Cohen-is-in-danger-of-becoming-cute

Thank you for posting this. I especially liked the following quote from this article, because I kinda thought that's what Leonard was saying in YWID, even though I wasn't sure if I should agree. https://www.thedailybeast.com/in-death-leonard-cohen-is-in-danger-of-becoming-cute ......... “There’s nob...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's poetry and novels

I hope no one minds if I continue to post my thoughts on what I am reading regardless. This week, I have had a chance to finish The Spice Box of Earth and get half way through “The Favourite Game”. Because it is winter, both Dave and I sat around the fire and read for a bit this weekend for once. He...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

4! I loved that you listened to the radio broadcast in hopes of hearing something about our friend B4. How cool that would have been. I also loved your story of what it was like for you 50 years ago when Songs of Leonard Cohen was first recorded. It made me wonder about Leonard himself at that time....

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's poetry and novels

I am reading The Spice Box of Earth, and I am not done with it yet, but I wondered... is it considered his best work? I mean strictly regarding individual books of poetry, not collections or "best of"s or whatever?? For some reason, the general aura around what I have heard about his poetry makes me...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Hi Alan! Thank you for adding your thoughts. I never feel I have really looked at a song until we have heard from everyone at least once. ... O lady with your legs so fine O stranger at your wheel, The lady represents beauty of the ideal of the outcome of the revolution. The stranger at your wheel h...

Re: Leonard singing "O Christmas Tree" (more or less)

Hartmut and B4- Sorry for intruding, but I was interested in seeing the O Christmas Tree by Leonard so I followed your links and found this thread, and when I clicked on your link for "Non je ne regrette rien" by Edith Piaf, I immediately recognized it from the Dove Chocolate commercial that has bee...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

.... "Stories of the Street .... I typed out the lyrics partly to facilitate making reference to them, but mostly because I find that doing so helps to immerse me in the song and helps the thinking process. (As I was copying the lyrics my mind wandered, and I imagined actually composing them...) I ...
