Re: The Holy Longing, Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote this poem on 31st July 1814. It was first published in 1817 as "Vollendung" (Fulfillment), then renamed "Selbstopfer" (Self-sacrifice), and eventually published in "West-östlicher Divan" (1819) as "Selige Sehnsucht" (Blissful longing). Selige Sehnsucht Sagt es nieman...

Re: working with leonard cohen

Once I had tried to listen to "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Jennifer Warnes, and switched it off after maybe a minute. Now I had a look at her "mended" lyrics. Yes, I suppose Leonard Cohen would forgive her. That's about all anybody can reasonably try to do here anyway. And merriam-webster.com says that...

Re: Is the "There is a crack in everything" verse (The Anthem) related to the Tikkun olam?

Hi, I'm your fan. Maybe this can help: http://jewishjournal.com/culture/religion/212745/ In particular this passage: If you are familiar with Lurianic Kabbalah, and its main heretical interpretation, Sabbateanism, you will understand this album, these two songs [“You Want It Darker” and “Steer Your ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Hi everybody. Just as "String Reprise / Treaty" to me is and is not one with "Treaty", I have and have not a preference for that gorgeously beautiful masterpiece closing the "Darker" album — "like a rose on its ladder of thorn" picked by one who knows why he's picking it. As for the underlying smile...

The Fool: 15 – A few trifles

Und sie schweigen, weil die Scheidewände weggenommen sind aus ihrem Sinn, und die Stunden, da man sie verstände, heben an und gehen hin. Rainer Maria Rilke, Die Irren (The Mad) (And they're silent, for the separating panels are removed out of their mind, and the hours one might understand them come ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

When I was a boy, I was struck one day by the realisation what a gorgeous thing it is that the adults haven't replaced all the trees in towns and villages, maybe even forests, with iron or concrete poles yet. And that I must never tell anybody, lest I wake sleeping dogs. That's why I still don't tel...

The Fool: 14 – A ruckus in the dayroom

Safety first Someone was sitting by the rear wall of the dayroom, incessantly clapping his hands. The fool walked up to him: "Why are you doing this?" "It keeps the crocodiles away." There was not a single crocodile anywhere near or far of course, but the clapper would probably object that this was...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Its4inthemorning, I like your take on "Stories of the Street"! Here a few additions, as they come to mind: "I know you've heard it's over now and war must surely come" Bob Dylan has "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" on his 1965 album "Bringing It All Back Home". The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis had brough...

The Fool: 13 – A few sentences

Nothing is static. The Nothing is static. Only nothings are static. (Even though, occasionally, in certain eternities, besides static nothings there are dynamic somethings too, like for example fools who give a start when all of a sudden there's a frog coming into their nirvana.) All somethings are ...

Re: "Cuff" becomes "Cough" Arghh.

Wow!

Last time I searched the web for this "cough" was maybe a year ago, when I had found it in a newly published book on Leonard Cohen's lyrics. Since then it seems to have spread considerably.

I think it was a good idea indeed to bring the matter into the open!

At the top of this page, beneath the signature, there is a link to http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com which has a Song Index link on the left (5th entry beneath the three World Tour entries). (Well, I see Hartmut was faster.) This is what I find: Then I think you're playing far too rough for a lady wh...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Now the Captain he was dying But the Captain wasn't hurt The silver bars were in my hand I pinned them to my shirt. Obviously he is talking about something different than a captain there. No idea what precisely a captain is, except on a ship. Military matters are none of my business. So here just a...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Thank you very much, Its4inthemorning and Vickie.

I'm glad to learn that Leonard Cohen's yahrzeit was honoured so successfully.
And no, your accounts are not too long, not at all!

A rare thing: I'm at a loss for words...

Thank you so much, both of you, and all the others who posted elsewhere!
