Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
Well Vickie, our teachers are equines. This rather special kind of discipline is not easily understood from the outside. ● how would you translate "philosophy" How would I translate one single word with no context! (Not even as much as specifying the source language.) How would you transla...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
In English, "lover" of wisdom sounds Ok. The scope covered by the term is vast enough. In French, "amant" instead of "ami" would be more than weird. In German, "Liebhaber" instead of "Freund" might be possible, but I never saw it. And no, I didn't ma...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
Bev, I agree that when one journalist comes up with a handy label (for any notion), others are prone to eagerly pick it up. The "break-up song" at hand is neither too ludicrous nor too esoteric, and they can always claim that this "in between" is not mediocrity but The Middle Way...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
Vickie, I'm afraid that in the context of "Hallelujah" the label "a break-up song" just doesn't mean anything at all. Journalists are not paid for the blank page, and so they have to write something, anything, in order to make a living. One of the basic ideas is, "If you've ...

Re: FROM LEONARD: HAPPENS TO THE HEART
Hello esha, and welcome to the forum! Short of giving an exhaustive answer to your questions, let me try at least to develop a few aspects: There’s a mist of summer kisses Where I tried to double-park The rivalry was vicious And the women were in charge "to double-park" — here's what Merri...

Re: never-ending gallery
Introspection is no less of a problem than other human enterprises... I believe that there are far greater problems that some humans face than an attempt at self-awareness. ;-) I agree, obviously. But then I think that — in most cases — hunger, disease, old age, and death are not exactly "huma...

Re: never-ending gallery
Hello Lisa, please be reassured! My link was not aimed at anyone, it was just an association. Georges Brassens wrote this song as a reaction to suggestions that he might become more famous (and make more money) if he got himself involved in a few scandals. According to what I read here and there — a...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
Its4inthemorning, I'm glad you added this update to the first part of your essay: Edit 2/7/20: I was leafing through Sylvie's "I'm Your Man" and see that I should have offered thanks to Rob Hallet as well as to Robert Kory for being instrumental in Leonard's decision to tour again; Hallet,...

Re: never-ending gallery
I agree,Geoffrey. Prompted by the Corona panic, this morning I ordered an English translation of Jean Giono's "Le Hussard sur le toit". In this novel, the panic reactions to the 1832 cholera epidemic here in Provence play an important part. If the translation is worth reading (the original...

Re: Happens to the Heart - song and video released
"go tell the young Messiah." Here I'm sorry, but I must disagree. There is an important typo in that quote. This is what the poem says in S1L5-8: Sure it failed my little fire But it's bright the dying spark Go tell the young messiah What happens to the heart And this is what it says in t...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums
Hey, that's a lot of input! Good thoughts, the two of you! For my part, I'm wandering off into details quite a bit, so my contribution (at least for now) is somewhat meagre. Here's what I can come up with so far: ● I'm struck by the 3 + 1 quality of the album — feels to me as though the previous thr...
