Scraping The Barrel (A Villanele)
I'm sure all your friends will agree You're mining the sofa for change, You're scraping the barrel with me. It's really not you, it's totally me, I'm odd, queer, peculiar, strange, I'm sure all your friends will agree. You know there are plenty more fish in the sea, Don't plumb the depths it's derr...

Re: Clock Watchers In The Woods
Yes Lizzie, I've witnessed people with dementia whisked away to prevent eembarrassment too. So if there's an ambiguity here, I think it should stand.

The Absolute Need
Owls hoot in the oaks the jasmine is heady, I look from the window and watch them together scoop the moon from the shimmering surface drunk & unsteady, I almost believe we'll be happy forever I'm 54 and I'm ready. I almost believe we are marked, we are blessed, so I'm keeping the vigil to honour...

Re: Clock Watchers In The Woods
Cate, that's exactly how it was in my mind. The impetus came from my own embarrassment as a boy when I declared my cousin Barry "sexy" because he wore an open necked shirt! Of course I had no idea what this meant, but I knew from adult reaction I'd said the wrong thing!. It stays with me t...

Re: Choices
So the majority of the population would have understood me! That's what I get from too many Hollywood movies! I did this poem because I know some of my others need a bit of commitment to get to the end... Hope you are well and thanks once again for reading.

Choices
Twenty brands of cornflakes
On the supermarket shelf.
A myriad minor choices -
"But is there something else?"
Sixty flavours of jam,
A hundred kinds of pop.
Tons of trivial choices -
But only one place to shop.
(US readers, Pop is soda!)

Blimey ... it would be the only reason one might ever drag me to the great temple of doom that is the totally inappropriately named Backwater!

Re: Clock Watchers In The Woods
I can see now there's an ambiguity there that I must correct somehow! I can see how you arrived at that conclusion.... The subjects are granny and grandson... it's the grandson who draws attention to what Grandma said to the embarrassment of his parents and those assembled.. out of the mouth of babes!

Clock Watchers In The Woods
A poem about embarrassment & Alzheimers Cloth ears? Her ill fitting teeth? What did granny just gabble at the gathering? The voice above the rabble Stopped the chatter and the babble, Granny said there are cock suckers in the woods. Everyone looks nervous, coughs and shuffles, muffles giggles. ...

Re: For A Second I Forgot
Thanks again for the comments Lizzy. I feel like I've been writing verse since infancy. About 26 years ago I did a writing course (just one semester) and what I really got out of that was a better understanding of how poetry works, but more than that I got an audience of critics that helped me refin...
