Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

I loved watching Arthur Smith do his Edinburgh sketch on Leonard Cohen when it was televised. And I have just read this: Especially loved the last paragraph. Arthur Smith has had a long love of Leonard Cohen and regularly performs renditions of the late Canadian singer’s most well-known songs, incl...

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

No need to apologize Monsieur Tony (that is about the extent of my French !) :) I have to say the clip posted was barely a few seconds so I have no opinion on it, one way or other. In general though I am a fan of Madonna's music and her singing voice, not to mention her polarizing personality. What...

Nice to see that it is dicussed.
Yes Wybe and it was well discussed I thought. Thank for putting the link on, I am sleeping better now that I have let my frustrations about Madonna out.

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

...Yes I do think Leonard's intention of the song is important and to see it used purely as some form of "let's all give it a go" and have no reason for its very conception just pees me off a little, does it show?... No, it doesn't show at all, you hide your disdain very well! ;-) Yes I t...

Bon soir, Monsieur Viscount. Il me semble that vous êtes le language police ici. I hope vous avez un nice, smart uniforme and a grand dictionnaire anglais avec tous les phrases and mots francais deleted en rouge. Pas de 'cliché', 'double entendre' or 'boutique' pour vous. It may be something of a '...

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

Hi Lisa, Actually I think we can understand many of Leonard's songs but as I once wrote on the Forum, Pete Townshend said he couldn't recall what the words meant, or even why he wrote them to many of his songs for The Who, guess Leonard would have been across that Bridge but as a writer, a poet and ...

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

Nice to see a balanced response, Vicomte, or would you rather be addressed as 'Viscount' in future as you now seem to prefer prefer English? Why should it be balanced my view is how I see something, not to offer a balance of some kind, then your view can be seen as clouded. Vicomte by the way is wh...

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

I'll just say it in my own way then, rather than try and look like I am some kind of elitist wordsmith. Madonna's version was to me absolutely crap, she knew nothing as to why Leonard even wrote the song, or what is was about. Tony if you liked it, say so, no need for the French, we have lived here ...

Re: Madonna Performs 'Haleluya' At Met Gala 2018

Are there no depths some artists won't sink to?
Does she even understand what the song is about, like 99% of all that sing it, they just sing the words in a way they think it sounds good but not understanding why Leonard wrote the verses he did.

Re: My Dream "Songs of Leonard Cohen" Concert

John, apologies, I totally forgot Sharon and "Alexandra Leaving" it is absolutely superb. I agree about tributes have to be sung well but thus far I have not been impressed. We will have to agree to disagree about Antony, his feelings for the song just hits the spot. We have, I think talke...

Re: My Dream "Songs of Leonard Cohen" Concert

Personally I cringe at 99% of covers and meetings where Cohen's songs are being sung by others. I would rather play a DVD of Leonard's than go and watch any show where performers pay homage to a song they can't get close to the original. Not awful of course but just not the same by a mile. No one so...

"...............or a 500 seater in Brighton." Are you missing another nought? Pretty sure the Brighton Centre holds 4500 and it looked fairly full for Leonard's gigs there in 2008 and 2013. Even around 1979 when LC played the Dome in Brighton that held over 1700, wonderful night, sound the...

Re: 'The times they are a-changing...' Montreal concert

You were a good judge then not to attend, Wendy. We were staying in Sitges as we often do, so we thought it would be nice to get in to Barcelona early and take in the lunch. The film being shown had oohs and argghs at the very sound of Leonard, some older women cooing, some making rather a silly fus...
