Songs of Leonard Cohen Pressing question

Postby Klaytex on Fri Mar 30, 2012 3:45 am

Hi, new here to the forum. I have a friend that is having an audio get-together playing only mono LPs. I'm having a REALLY hard time trying to find out whether or not my copy of SOLC is mono or stereo. The only catalog numbers are COL 63241 1 (LC 0162) with CB 271 on the back cover. Matrix of side 1 is stamped 01-63241-1A-1, side 2 is etched 01-63241-2B-1.

There is a green circular sticker on the cover that reads "TIRAGE LIMITÉ fnac 99F"

LP labels are red Columbia, with no mention of CBS anywhere. Made in Holland with a 1968 Sony copyright. Anyone ever seen one of these? Is this some sort of funky bootleg copy or a legit pressing?

Thanks!

You can check and compare the sound if you download mono album from, e.g., demonoid. I did - and I must say the mono version is superb. It is like Cohen wanted it to sound in 1967 - he and voice and guitar and Kaleidoscope in foreground, and all the production silenced as much he could in the background (he himself mixed the album after second producer quit.)

Welcome Klaytex to the LC Forum. I'll try to answer your question as soon as I get back from Easter Holiday.
I have about 15 different vinyl pressings of Songs of LC, both Mono and Stereo from different countries but not sure about the one you mentioned. Could you add a picture of the record label to your post?

Oh, right, I forgot you are spending holidays abroad! Say hi to Lennard from me. And I'm sure we'll find a moment to see each other soon (either in Belgium or The Netherlands).

Thanks for helping Klaytex, by the way! I don't know a thing about all the different vinyl pressings... :-)

I checked my collection, but have no definitive answer. I think yours is a Stereo, because Mono versions are only made in US and UK. There is a thread about the Mono versions elsewhere on this Forum.
There are at least two different Stereo versions that are made in Holland. I attach some pictures of one with CB 271 on the back cover as you mentioned, but mine has LC 0149 in the right lower corner, and not LC 0162 like yours.

Could you post some pictures of your album? Here are my pictures.
