I've been listening frequently as well, it is wonderful. Many good (and a few less good) covers that I haven't heard before, plus some songs performed by LC himself that I rarely hear. Listening to A Thousand Kisses Deep now.

god save the cbc!

Looks like programming will be alternating at that channel.
Here is an article with more information -

I've heard this song 3 times now on the Cohen station. Hey CBC - he's not your man!

Okay, I appreciate that artists have "artistic license" when interpreting another artist's material. Basically they can change the arrangement and instrumentation as much as they want and even make some changes to the chord structure and melody.

But what's with Judy Collins messing with the lyrics (Suzanne & et al)!?!?!?! Who does she think she is? To me, once you change the lyrics it ain't the same song. And it's not like she's going to improve them any!!!

Quite right, Steve, and what you point out is a problem with the new CBC Music streaming channels. CBC, which is public radio, has entered into a contract with a private company, AVLA Inc., (part of the CRIA sphere - Canada's counterpart to the RIAA) for content. You can now hear Ryan Laird on the "Complete Cohen" channel, multiple times, even though it's not a Leonard Cohen song he's performing. He's signed to CMT/Sony which is one of AVLA's corporate clients. Similarly, you can find covers of Cohen songs by AVLA clients such as those in the Simon Cowell stable, but, it appears, you won't be able to hear covers of Cohen songs by artists who are not licensed through AVLA.

As manager to an artist who performs several well-loved covers of Cohen, but, who has chosen to not be part of the old record industry establishment, I spotted this dissonance first on the Cohen channel, but, it seems to a failing throughout the entire galaxy of channels. I've pointed out to the CBC this rather odd situation of public radio paying for access to a private music licensing agency - and, at the same time, not utilizing rich, and Canadian, musical resources it's collected over decades as a public institution.

So, far, there's no indication CBC Music plans to become more inclusive though there's always hope. It may be that the "deal is done", and a corporate filter is now applied to what should be a cultural resource. One change - they've renamed the channel "Cohen Covered" - which, at least, is more accurate a name than "Complete Cohen". Perhaps, if they can be persuaded to use a real person, rather than an automated program, to playlist the music they've licensed privately, you may eventually see Ryan Laird's own song replaced with something actually by our man, Leonard Cohen.

p.s. As someone who, over the years, has been known to say from a public stage "God Bless the CBC" - it is extremely disappointing to note what's happening now.

I was greatly delighted upon learning of it, and still am cheered, that Leonard's music is given its own channel (for however long). Such delight, though, is leavened by learning what lies beneath. And, things such as the executive rush to oblivion for the CBC's regional music libraries: http://www.canada.com/news/music+library+could+lost/6150069/story.html

Sochijava, you have it right. We need now say "God save the CBC".

p.s. and when it comes to helping save the CBC, we can all lend a hand:

"The loss simply doesn't justify the savings." says CBC Radio host Tom Allen - signing the petition in an effort to save the CBC music libraries across Canada: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/save-cbc-music-archives - Join in and save a cultural resource that is being senselessly culled: http://www.chroniclejournal.com/editorial/daily_editorial/2012-01-27/behind-music + http://www.cbc.ca/eyeopener/2012/01/26/cbc-calgary-record-library-closing Help, the time is now!

Far too many covers now.

Far too little from Leonard himself.

Some of the covers are REALLY bad!

Yes, I can't find it any more. It is pretty disappointing as CBC Radio 2 made particular mention upon the launch of CBC Music that Leonard Cohen had his own channel. First it was Leonard alternating with covers, then it was covers with a very occasional LC original, now everything has disappeared!

Pity that this has been discontinued (and that it degenerated as noted).

Happily, I have something even better than an "almost-all-Leonard-Cohen-(plus a bunch of covers)" radio station: it is called an i-Pod, and it plays nothing but Leonard Cohen, 24/7!
