Late to the game. - There's also "Alexandra Leaving".Herbsttag wrote:Looking for two songs that are based on poems (the poems are not written by Leonard). There may be more than two, but I'm only aware of these.

Probably "Hallelujah"?Goldin wrote:Now, when 'LC in charts' theme is trending, what about the only Cohen's song ever topped a national singles chart?

Well, should we count it?Hartmut wrote:There's also "Alexandra Leaving".
Based on...
Loosely, I'd say: http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/cavafy.html
Speaking about #1 - not Hallelujah, though.
Re: L.C. Song Hunt
"Topped" as in "Number 1"? I don't know ...Goldin wrote:Hartmut wrote:Speaking about #1 - not Hallelujah, though.
Closing Time, Dance Me to the End of Love, and Take This Waltz reached the numbers 5 and 6 (in Finland and in Canada, respectively), though.
And Hallelujah ...Various cover versions reached the top spot in Norway, in the UK, and in Ireland.
Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Ok, that's my fault: I meant, a Cohen's song in his own rendition.
So, you may post the next question, Hartmut, - by the way, the song I kept in mind is a good addition to Alexandra Leaving if we return to the previous round

Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Thanks for the Hint! - I think you're talking about Lover etc. I'm too lazy to look it up now, but I seem to remember that that song was in the Germans charts.
Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Lover Lover Lover was #5 in West Germany.
The song in question is another one created from a poem. It could become especially popular in a particular country, and it apparently did - judging on its chart performance.

Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Hm ... "Take This Waltz"? In Spain?

Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Thank you.
The song I'm looking for could be regarded as a precursor to "Feels So Good".

Maybe even to "The Darkness".Hartmut wrote:The song I'm looking for could be regarded as a precursor to "Feels So Good".
Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Billy Joel's "The River Of Dreams" might be related to it as well.

Re: L.C. Song Hunt
There's also a similarity to "Ain't No Cure for Love".
Re: L.C. Song Hunt
It's a song from the 90s - that got somehow resurrected in the 2010s.
Re:stranger post
Hi, I haven't been posting anything but tonight my 15 year old grand-son announced he had discovered LC and I was so happy I jumped into the forum to see what we had in common. To stranger, I share your views on Literature. Naipaul, Marquez,Zafon are all on my bookshelf. Loved LC from the time I heard him singing Suzanne back in 1968 and he enlightened my poetry. Will miss him deeply and wonder where I will now find another musical guide.
