And the same to you, Zenlove - glad to see Raglan Road surface on the LC forum.

That would have to be John McCormack then, the Third cousin.

I had a similar relative who worked in our local ...ah...shall we say...waste water treatment plant - he was fondly known in family circles as "the turd cousin."

Hi Red Poppy,

Thanks for your lovely reply.

My grandfather Hugh McLaughlin was Joseph Locke 's cousin so I am the turd!

It was renowned irish tenor John McCormack (1894-1945) who advised Josef that his voice was more suited to a lighter repertoire than the operatic one Josef had in mind, and urged him to find a theatrical agent. So it was Josef found his way to the offices of band-leader/impresario Jack Hylton (1892-1965). Hylton had booked Josef into the Victoria Palace, but found it difficult to fit his real name onto the bill, so shortened it to Josef Locke. Two years later, Josef was signed by Lew and Leslie Grade, who steered the singer to real stardom.

And my great uncle Bert Mac , Hugh 's Brother discovered Dana!

He was a Irish Yodeler in the 1930's I think , my second cousin was a well known football player Peter McGillicuddy who played for Leatherhead FC in the 70's ,he was as good as the late George Best!

Speak to you soon!

All the Best

:D zenlove and Red Poppy, this thread ended up being about Irish poets. The Chieftans, 'Tears of Stone' is a favourite album and I know 'Raglan Road' well. You may have seen this fascinating old clip on traditional Irish music about Brendan Behan, Patrick Kavanagh and Flann O'Brien, who inspired Ronnie Drew, who formed The Dubliners with Luke Kelly.

I claim no Irish heritage but Aussies have a well known affinity with the Irish, take Russell Crowe quoting Kavanagh during his acceptance speech at the 2000 BAFTA awards. The BBC cut it from the final broadcast and did he let them know how pissed off he was. ( :? Of course when he does things like this we remember that he was born in New Zealand).

I also know of Behan, mainly due to Australian sources. Paul Kelly, one of our best song writers, wrote the song 'Laughing Boy' about him. Also a song about him, sung originally by the Clancy Brothers, was covered by the The Doug Anthony All Stars, in the mid-eighties. Couldn't find it but found this one about Irish Krishnas.

Kavanagh (Raglan Road) wrote:I gave her gifts of the mind,
I gave her the secret signs,
That's known to the artists who have known
The true gods of sound and stone.
Thank you :D

Hi blonde madonna,

Here it is!

Raglan Road
by Patrick Kavanagh

On Raglan Road of an autumn day I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue
I saw the danger and I passed along the enchanted way
And I said let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day

On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion's play
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay
Oh I loved too much and by such by such is happiness thrown away

I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret signs
That's known to the artists who have known the true Gods of sound and stone
And words and tint without stint, I gave her poems to say
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should a creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay he'll lose his wings at the dawn of day

This is so beautiful and it's mine and I'm sure most people's favorite .

I hope you like this blonde madonna.

Blessings

Well, good to see this thread has gone in interesting directions.

Sorry for mistaking JOe Locke for John McCormac - it's the glasses.

And, of course, Dana, as well as winning the Eurovision. went on to become an MEP!

Look (at me) Leonard, look what you started! :?
