The following review was published in the June 2007 issue of UNCUT magazine:
Anjani: Blue Alert
Subheading:
Leonard Cohen rendered as a younger, more melodious woman.
Muse, lover, catalyst and collaborator - Anjani Thomas has many roles for Cohen, who produced this third album with the tenderest of touches.
Its songs, gathered from snippets in Cohen's notebooks and pressed by her to completion, come laced with the master's verbal elegance and world-weary romanticism - for a taster, savour "Had to go crazy to love you, Had to go down to the pit.".
Anjani, backing herself on keyboards, delivers them with a well-judged lack of extravagance, her voice by turns smoky and hard. Blue Alert is a small but flawless gem, perfect for Norah Jones fans wondering where to turn next.
Rating: four stars (out of a possible five).
Reviewer: Neil Spencer.
