anthony and the johnsons

Post by liverpoolken »

Just heard Anthony and The Johnsons singing The Guests during their tour of Italy on UK TV. Wonderful stuff.

They were apparently on the the Sydney Hal Wilmer show.

Have I missed something, or has anyone posted up about this group?

You've missed it. Antony was already in NYC show I think, with Dress Rehearsal Rag, but only after Sydney he became the main star of the show. He's much compared to Nina Simone ~ I got both his CDs two days ago and I'm still shocked. If you forget the fact it's the male singin it (actually, the transvestit male), I really have impression that I'm listening to Nina Simone, with touches of Elvis' crooning. Unbelievable stuff - highly recommended!
He will tour UK in June-July, check http://www.antonyandthejohnsons.com

nice. i almost saw antony and the johnsons. however, i did see antony when he toured with lou reed. i saw lou 3 times, twice with antony. very good singer. he did "candy says," a velvets song, and everyone stood for it. so sweet.

I saw Antony perform at the Sydney Hal Willner tribute and I think many would agree that, whether he "stole the show" or not, he certainly made a big impact on the audience in terms of his unusual falsetto voice and the interesting delivery of his solo performances (The Guests and If It Be Your Will). 8)

Cheers :)

wow, he did "if it be your will"?? that's one of my favorites. yeah, he does have an unusual falsetto. kind of reminds me of klaus nomi, at least with the soprano vocals.

Thanks Tom, Andrew and Teratogen for the update and info.

I certainly did miss the posts about this group.

What a voice.

Coming across them as did minding my own business sitting on the sofa at home watching TV blew my socks off.

I shall be down to record shop tomorrow.
