January 15, 2012, Los Angeles: For the first time in its history, The New Yorker, esteemed for its consistent publication of great poetry, will stream on its website (http://www.newyorker.com) Leonard Cohen’s new lyric “Going Home,” one of ten songs on his new studio album, Old Ideas. The New Yorker will publish the lyric in its January 23rd issue (on newsstands January 16th). The song will also be streamed on The New Yorker website on January 16th. New Yorker poetry editor Paul Muldoon, who has been listening to Cohen since 1967, said that he is “thrilled” this will be happening in the magazine, which has recently been acknowledging the great power and achievement of singer-songwriters. Muldoon said, “The New Yorker has been publishing lyrics over the past years by Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon…Cohen is in some elite company, including his own!” Cohen’s rich, complex lyrics have intoxicated listeners for more than a generation; his work bridges the world of lyric poetry and song. GOING HOME FIRST LISTENING!!!!
I've already listened to 'Goiung Home' Quite a strange beginning for a record. The songs seems to me as a final-record one. Very slow, but nice. There are some mistakes in the lyrics that the Newyorker has published. I'll try toi post them in a while here.
The soiund and style is that of Dear Heather. Where is the whole band? It sounds like keyboards as usual as lately in Cohen CDs. Missing the 'human' players, that great band of the world tour 2008-2010.

I can say those corrections are correct as I hear them but one thing I can't hear properly is "TUBE" which could be "TUNE".
I'm still thinking about how I feel about this song. I love the chorous but it hasn't had an instant impact on me like Show Me The Place did. But that's the thing with Leonard's songs, they reveal themselves in different ways to you when you're ready to hear what he's really saying. I think when I get the CD in a few weeks and everything is in context it will all come together as it should.

For me, the song is a dialogue between God and Leonard. God says he "likes to speak with Leonard", He makes a description of Leonard and the things he wants to do before 'going home' (which for me is before 'dying'): write a love song...etc. But God tells him that's not what He want him to do. God only wants Leonard to say the words: "Going home without my sorrow going home sometime tomorrow, going home to where it’s better than before. Going home without my burden going home behind the curtain going home without the costume that I wore."
Leonard is going home without 'the costume that he wore', naked, without clothes, his SOUL is going home, towards the Lord. For me, there's a great word-game in the song. The first SUIT (his real black suit) and the second COSTUME (his body, the suit of his soul, which he loses and goes home without it.) That's my point of view and my interpretation of the song, but I may be wrong.

Para mi la canción es un diálogo entre Dios y Leonard. Dios dice que "le gusta hablar con Leonard", Dios hace una descripción de Leonard y de las cosas que quiere hacer antes de 'volver a casa' (que para mí es 'antes de morir'): escribir una canción de amor...etc. Pero Dios le dice que eso no es lo que él quiere que haga. Dios solamente quiere que Leonard diga las palabras: de vuelta a casa sin mi dolor, de vuelta a casa en algún instante de mañana, de vuelta a casa donde se está mejor que antes. De vuelta a casa sin mi carga, de vuelta a casa detrás del telón, de vuelta a casa sin el traje que llevaba."
Leonard va de vuelta a casa 'sin el traje que llevaba', desnudo, sin ropas, su ALMA va de vuelta a casa, hacia el Señor. Para mí, hay un gran juego de palabras en la canción. Hay dos palabras inglesas: SUIT (traje) y COSTUME (traje o disfraz). Al principio de la canción Dios dice que Leonard es un bastardo que va siempre 'embutido en un traje', su traje de Armani negro de siempre. Al final de la canción dice que Leonard va 'de vuelta a casa sin su traje', es decir, va su ALMA de vuelta a casa sin el traje o disfraz que es el CUERPO. Esa es mi interpretación de la canción, pero puedo estar equivocado.
