Hi Rachel,

I was trying to remember that quote fully and exactly where it came from when I posted it. I knew I had it somewhere and with a bit of research here it is:

Leaving Green Sleeves (1979-)

Brighton 1979

Someone in the audience asks him to sing "Leaving Green Sleeves".

"Greensleeves" ? Oh I haven't sung that for about 300 years. I used to sing that when I was a troubadour in the south of France. My name was Artaud. I used to walk on those dusty roads singing Greensleeves. I haven't sung that for a long time. Please also don't ask me for "Don't pass me by" because I only ever did that once.

....and I knew exactly what you meant about us being there with him. ;-)

Hi Bev,

Thank you so much for all the beautiful details. He even remembers what his name was at that time - how fascinating!

So far, I'm not finding the Brighton 1979 recording in my collection (which is not as organized as it could be); I'll search some more but I might not have that one, in which case I will have to acquire it! (I must have read that quote in print somewhere, but oh my, I would love to hear Leonard saying those words. . .)

And thank you for saying that you knew what I meant - I am very touched by your sweet words - & it's good to know that one is not alone. . .

Hi again Rachel,

Just in case you can't find or don't have a copy, here is a link via Dr H Guy to download the six songs from The Dome, Brighton 1979 plus Birmingham same year.
http://1heckofaguy.com/2011/08/20/six-songs-from-1979-leonard-cohen-brighton-dome-concert-available-for-download/

Leonard spoke those words just before Billy Sunday (Blues For The Jews). Included is that wonderful version of Silent Night that Jarkko plays for us each Christmas with Leonard, Jennifer Warnes and Raffi Hakopian's wonderful violin!
As an interesting aside Mitch Watkins is playing electric guitar! History sure has a way of repeating itself in more ways than one ;-)
I haven't check the link so I hope it works for you. Happy Listening. :D

Thank you for the link, Bev! I do have a recording from Birmingham '79, but this might be a different recording, so I will download the whole thing - can't wait to hear it!
