Philadelphia - Tower Theatre - October 22 2009

Maarten - to the best of my recollection - the set list was as written (they did not do "That's No Way To Say Goodbye" and the "poem" was "A Thousand Kisses Deep."

• I'm Your Man
• A Thousand Kisses Deep (spoken)
• Take This Waltz (with band reintroduction)

Hi,

Marie Mazur and I are trying to compile complete setlists for all concerts, but it often isn't clear whether or not "The Flood" was performed...

Leonard sometimes recites it prior to "Anthem" at the end of the first set... It's a poem written in 1973 and is the last poem in Leonard's latest book - "Book of Longing."

"The flood it is gathering
Soon it will move
Across every valley
Against every roof
The body will break down
And the soul will break loose
I write all this down
But I don't have the proof." [ Sinai, 1973 ]

Then he goes on by reciting the start of "Anthem":

"Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in."

After which "Anthem" begins...

Please pay attention to this and add it to the setlist if you notice it!
For all setlists, see my file or go to the Speaking Cohen website, hosted by Marie.

Thanks in advance,
Maarten

Maarten, That is exactly what he did at MSG on Oct. 23: recited The Flood, then recited the first verse of Anthem, then directly into Anthem.

And ditto for the Philadelphia show. "The Flood" and then recited the first verse of "Anthem."

Maarten and Marie,

In Columbus, it was recited exactly as you posted, first the lines from 'The Flood' and then the lines from 'Anthem' before the song began.

Warmest regards,
Mary

Maarten, Perhaps someone has already posted about this elsewhere, but because you seemed to be trying to collect a very detailed record of the set I thought I should mention that some of the verses of A Thousand Kisses Deep were different at Madison Square Garden. I had not heard some of these verses before, and I thought they were very beautiful. Neither the first nor the last of the verses I'm quoting here are in the published poem in Book of Longing. He moved from familiar to "new" and back again so seamlessly...

I've used the Youtube video from caro8680 to reconstruct it.

The verses are the same (I think) until the verse that ends:
"But once or twice they let me play
A thousand kisses deep."

He then continued:
(I didn't get the first word of the line: either "Don't" or "No")
No matter if the road is long
No matter if it's steep
No matter if the moon goes out
And the darkness is complete
No matter if we lose our way
It's written that we'll meet
At least that's what I heard you say
A thousand kisses deep.

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
I'm just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loves you with his frozen love
His secondhand physique
WIth all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep.

Now that's my story, I admit
It's broken and it's bleak
But all the twisted pieces fit
A thousand kisses deep."

I hope this is helpful.

Sue - that is different. This is what he recited in Philadelphia.
You came to me this morning
And you handled me like meat
You'd have to be a man to know
How good that feels, how sweet...

My mirrored twin, my next of kin
I'd know you in my sleep
And who but you would take me in
A thousand kisses deep...

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I'm just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep...

I know you had to lie to me
I know you had to cheat
To pose all hot and high behind
The veils of sheer deceit...
Our perfect Porn Aristocrat
So elegant and cheap
I'm old - but I'm still into that
A thousand kisses deep...

I'm good at love, I'm good at hate
It's in between I freeze
I've been working out, but it's too late
It's been too late for years...

But you look good, you really do
They loved you on the street
If I could move I'd for kneel you
A thousand kisses deep...

I'm still working with the wine
Still dancing cheek to cheek
The band is playing "Auld Lang Syne"
But the heart will not retreat...

I ran with Diz, I sang with Ray
I never had their sweep
But once or twice, they let me play
A thousand kisses deep.

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I'm just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep...

But you don't need to hear me now
And every word I speak
It counts against me anyhow
A thousand kisses deep...

I forgot to put the youtube link in. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYgk6UF4tKQ
It's only a partial video, and it begins around the verse: "I ran with Diz, I sang with Ray/I never had their sweep/But once or twice they let me play/A thousand kisses deep."
To the best of my consciousness at the time, and my memory, up until then the words were the same as those that Linda has reported hearing in Philadelphia.

I'm curious to know at what point Leonard played the new song.
